Airport Express vs Airport Bus vs Taxi: Which to Choose?

As one of the world's busiest airports, Hong Kong International Airport has a well-developed transport network. Whether you value speed, value-for-money or door-to-door comfort, there is an option for you. Here we compare the three main public transport choices: the Airport Express, airport buses and taxis.

Airport Express: The Fastest Way to the City

The Airport Express is the quickest link between the airport and the city centre. Trains depart from Airport Station, stop at Tsing Yi and Kowloon, and terminate at Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes.

Pros: frequent departures (every 10-15 minutes), unaffected by road traffic; spacious carriages with free Wi-Fi and charging; free in-town check-in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations. Fares: about HK$115 to Hong Kong Station, HK$105 to Kowloon Station and HK$70 to Tsing Yi Station. Journey times: about 24, 22 and 14 minutes respectively.

Cons: pricier than airport buses; mainly serves the city core, so some areas need a transfer. Best for business travellers on a tight schedule or those headed near an Express station.

Airport Bus (Routes A, E, N): Best Value, Wide Coverage

Airport buses are operated mainly by Citybus and Long Win Bus, covering most of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

Route A (express): fewer stops, faster, fares about HK$20-50, most with luggage racks and USB charging. Route E (external): passes through the airport logistics area and Tung Chung, more stops, cheapest at about HK$10-25. Route N (overnight): serves late-night hours for red-eye flights, fares slightly higher.

Pros: wide coverage, affordable, some routes pass the Tsing Ma Bridge with scenic views. Cons: journey time affected by traffic, possible delays at peak hours. Check the Citybus or Long Win Bus websites for routes and timetables.

Taxi (Urban Red, NT Green, Lantau Blue): Door-to-Door

Taxis are divided by operating area: urban (red) taxis serve all of Hong Kong, New Territories (green) taxis operate mainly in designated NT areas, and Lantau (blue) taxis are limited to Lantau. Most airport trips use urban taxis.

Fares: urban taxis start at about HK$29 (first 2km), then metered; large luggage about HK$6 per item; tunnel tolls extra. From Central to the airport costs about HK$350-450 off-peak (including tolls and luggage, for reference only).

Pros: door-to-door, 24-hour, private. Cons: most expensive, affected by traffic. Other options include ride-hailing (Uber), private cars and hotel shuttles.

New Territories: Fastest & Cheapest Routes to the Airport

Tin Shui Wai

Long Win Bus route A37 is the best value for most residents. Cost (low to high): E37 < A37 < MTR transfer.

Tuen Mun

Long Win Bus A33X balances time and price. E33/E33P suit budget travellers.

Yuen Long

Long Win Bus A36 offers direct service and good value. E36/E36P suit budget travellers with time to spare.

Tsing Yi

The Airport Express (about 14 minutes) is fastest and most convenient. Long Win Bus A32 is the affordable direct option.

Sheung Shui

Citybus A22 is the most direct and commonly used. E22/E22P take longer.

Tsim Sha Tsui

Citybus A21 is most convenient. For speed and comfort with a bigger budget, take the Airport Express from Kowloon Station.

Sham Shui Po

Citybus A21 is the common direct choice. For time stability, MTR-transfer to Lai King then the Airport Express.

What transport is available late at night or in the early hours?

Main overnight airport buses are the NA lines run by Long Win Bus and Citybus, covering major areas of HK Island, Kowloon and the NT, but with less frequent and pricier service. The Airport Express is not 24-hour — the last train leaves around 12am-1am and the first around 5am-6am (check MTR for details). Taxis run 24 hours but demand is high late at night, so plan ahead.
