What Is the Macau Golden Bus? Two Routes, 30-40 Minutes

Since the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) opened, the “Macau Golden Bus” has become the budget-friendly way to travel between Hong Kong and Macau, alongside ferries and cross-border coaches. This 24-hour shuttle service connects the Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong ports seamlessly. A one-way trip from Hong Kong to Macau costs just HK$65 (HK$33 for children and seniors), while the overnight fare is HK$70 (HK$35 for children and seniors).

The Golden Bus operates two routes — the “Hong Kong-Macau Line” and the “Hong Kong-Zhuhai Line” — with a journey time of roughly 30-40 minutes.

Hong Kong Boarding Points & How to Get There

The Golden Bus departs from the Hong Kong Port (Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge). To board, you must first reach the port. From the city, the most direct option is taking an airport bus that terminates at the Hong Kong Port.

If your bus does not go to the HZMB Hong Kong Port, you can transfer for free at the airport. Note that this free transfer only applies to selected Citybus and Long Win Bus routes (check their official websites for details). If you take the MTR to Lantau, transfer to a feeder bus at Tung Chung or Sunny Bay stations. Other franchised buses and minibuses also connect the port to Tung Chung and the airport, and late-night routes serve the Hong Kong Port too.

HZMB Schedule | 24-Hour Service & Frequency

The HZMB shuttle (Golden Bus) runs 24 hours a day, with the following frequencies:

Hong Kong to Macau direction: roughly every 30 minutes from 00:00 to 06:14; every 15-20 minutes from 06:15 to 08:59; and every 5-10 minutes from 09:00 to 23:59.

Macau to Hong Kong direction: roughly every 30 minutes from 00:00 to 05:59; every 20-30 minutes from 06:15 to 07:59; and every 5-10 minutes from 08:00 to 23:59.

Golden Bus Fares at a Glance

The Golden Bus is the cheapest 24-hour option. A one-way daytime ticket from Hong Kong to Macau is HK$65 (HK$33 for children and seniors); the overnight fare is HK$70 (HK$35 for children and seniors). The overnight window is 00:00 to 05:59, so an after-work evening crossing is still charged at the daytime rate. Note that fares do not include the cost of getting to the port from other parts of Hong Kong, nor the onward transport from the Macau port to the city centre.

How to Buy Tickets | WeChat, Email or On-Site

Option 1: WeChat Advance Purchase

Buy in advance via the official Golden Bus WeChat mini-program. Pay with WeChat Pay, Alipay or Octopus; a QR code is issued once the transaction is confirmed.

Option 2: Email Registration

You can also register by email and buy directly, paying with WeChat Pay, Alipay or Octopus. Self-service ticket machines at the port let you scan your QR code to collect your ticket.

Option 3: On-Site Purchase

Tickets can be bought on site with cash, WeChat Pay, Alipay or credit card. Note that while the Macau port accepts Hong Kong dollars, it does not give Hong Kong dollar change — change is given in Macanese patacas. It is best to carry small notes if paying cash.

Fleet & Luggage Allowance

The fleet has 120 buses in total, including double-decker, single-decker and coach buses — all at the same fare, with no standing passengers allowed. Each passenger may carry one free bag measuring no more than 76cm × 51cm × 32cm (30in × 20in × 13in) and weighing no more than 20kg. Foldable strollers require staff approval before purchase.

Onboard Services | USB Charging & Free WiFi

Buses have a luggage area and USB charging ports so you can keep your phone topped up, plus free onboard WiFi to keep you connected for the roughly 45-minute journey. Single-decker buses are roomier, while double-deckers offer better views.

Refund Policy

Full refunds with no fees are offered if the service cannot run due to weather or unforeseen events (typhoons, rainstorms, natural disasters, etc.). For other refunds: within 30 minutes of purchase, a 10% fee per ticket applies; after 31 minutes or more, a 50% fee applies. Tickets bought at the counter must be refunded in person at the original purchase location.

The HK-Macau Express (cross-boundary coach) has multiple pick-up points across Hong Kong, offering point-to-point connections and a comfortable alternative for those prone to seasickness. Direct services run from Macau city locations (The Venetian, Galaxy, MGM, Grand Lisboa and Sands hotels) via the HZMB straight to Elements and Prince Edward (Shanghai Street) in Kowloon; transfer services reach Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Sheung Wan, Tsuen Wan, East Point City, Kwun Tong and Wong Tai Sin.

Macau Arrival Points & Connecting Transport

Free Casino Shuttle Buses

After clearing customs, there is only one road into Macau city, so there is no casino-shuttle lineup like at the Outer Harbour or Taipa ferry terminals. Instead, a free shuttle operated jointly by the casino operators takes passengers to the Outer Harbour or Taipa ferry terminal, where you can transfer to a casino shuttle bus. It currently runs from 9:00am to 12:00 midnight, about 5-7 buses per hour.

Loop-Line Bus

To reach the city centre directly from the Macau port, take the loop-line bus — the route is a bit roundabout, taking about 20 minutes to the centre. Outside service hours, take bus 101X to other Macau peninsula interchange stops (such as Praça de Ferreira do Amaral) and transfer to daytime or night buses to Cotai. Fare: MOP 6 cash, or MOP 4 with a stored-value card.
