Hong Kong Palace Museum

The Hong Kong Palace Museum is located at the western end of the West Kowloon Cultural District. The museum showcases hundreds of precious artefacts from the Palace Museum, many of which are being exhibited publicly in Hong Kong for the first time. Some of the collections have never been publicly displayed before. Adopting an innovative curatorial approach, the museum presents a Hong Kong perspective combined with a global vision, and also regularly holds special exhibitions on Chinese art and culture, as well as artistic treasures from around the world.

Nine Galleries with Distinctive Features

The Hong Kong Palace Museum houses a total of nine exhibition galleries, hosting thematic and special exhibitions. In the opening exhibitions, five galleries showcase the architecture of the Palace Museum, its art collections (including calligraphy, painting, ceramics and artefacts), Sino‑foreign cultural exchanges during the Ming and Qing dynasties, court life and culture, as well as the Palace Museum's role in cultural heritage preservation. Two additional thematic galleries respectively showcase Hong Kong's Chinese art collections and multimedia installations created by Hong Kong artists inspired by Palace Museum culture. The museum also regularly holds special exhibitions on Chinese art and culture, as well as artistic treasures from around the world.

Gallery 8: Treasures of the Mughal Dynasty — Masterpieces from the Victoria and Albert Museum, UK (6 August 2025 to 23 February 2026)

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, this exhibition is the first major comprehensive exhibition in Hong Kong to fully showcase the art of the Mughal Empire (1526–1857). It features over 100 treasures from the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK and other major institutions, covering paintings, jewellery, architectural elements, weapons and textiles. The exhibits also include items from the Hop Yat‑sze Collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, as well as treasures from the Mengdiexuan Collection in the UK, Kuwait and Hong Kong.

Gallery 9: "The Wondrous Carpet: The Interweaving of Islam and World Civilisations" (18 June 2025 to 6 October 2025)

This is Hong Kong's first exhibition focusing on cultural exchanges between Islamic and Chinese civilisations, as well as the artistic achievements of Safavid Iran, Mughal India and Ottoman Turkey. It features approximately 100 precious artefacts from the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar and other major institutions, including carpets, ceramics, metalwork, illuminated manuscripts and jade objects, reflecting the artistic interactions between the Safavid, Mughal and Ottoman dynasties.
