At first glance, Kwun Tong might look more like a post-apocalyptic sci-fi set than a creative neighbourhood, but this eastern Kowloon gem has its cool factor well hidden beneath the surface. Once a major salt production centre during the Song Dynasty (1200s), it was originally named "Gwun Tong" (官塘, literally "government ponds"). After evolving into one of Hong Kong's first satellite towns in the 1950s and later enduring the decline of manufacturing, government revitalisation plans in 2010 transformed the area. Today, Kwun Tong is a vibrant mix of small businesses, hidden gems, and the unflagging spirit of old Hong Kong.

Kwun Tong has reinvented itself from a fading industrial district into an entrepreneurship hotspot, with countless small businesses, co-working spaces, and creative ventures tucked away inside its numerous industrial buildings. For those in the know, this neighbourhood is an unlikely treasure trove of independent restaurants, quirky cafés, and themed party rooms — you just need to look beyond the garage-lined streets and venture upstairs.
How to get there
Kwun Tong is in eastern Kowloon, served directly by the Kwun Tong MTR station on the Kwun Tong Line. Bus options include Citybus routes 55, 78X, 101, and the weekend-only 78C, plus KMB routes 89, 17, 3D, and W2. Green minibuses 22A, 47, 56, and 59 also serve the area.

Skip the APM mall food court and explore the neighbourhood's real culinary treasures. Le Monde brings a touch of French fine dining to Kwun Tong with dishes like quail leg confit, baked oysters, and French onion soup. Factory 99 draws a loyal lunch crowd with generous Western portions, while Gavi is a spacious cafe-bistro with a pet-friendly outdoor terrace.
The Hunt Coffee & Roastery may sound coffee-focused but it's their bone marrow and duck breast linguine that steals the show.
