1. The Exchange TRX

The Exchange TRX opened mid-week in November 2023, yet shoppers still swarmed this sparkling new complex spanning over 1.3 million square feet. Beyond 400 leading brands — including Malaysia's first Apple Store, first Shake Shack, and Gentle Monster's first Malaysian flagship — there's a ten-acre rooftop park with al fresco dining, a kids' water-play area, multipurpose facilities, a formal garden and an urban forest of 900+ trees. Other Malaysia-first brands exclusive to TRX include activewear label Alo Yoga, skincare brand Drunk Elephant, and Maison Kitsuné with its Café Kitsuné.

Getting there: Jalan Tun Razak can feel like a car park at peak hours, but The Exchange TRX has the city's only interchange between the two MRT lines, reachable from either the Kajang or Putrajaya line.

2. Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Since Time Out last updated this guide, two more Pavilion malls have appeared in the Klang Valley — but the first is still the best. Pavilion KL stands out even in Bukit Bintang with its mix of high-end and high-street fashion, restaurants and bars. Some 700 stores are spread across ten levels and nine "precincts": find the city's only Five Guys at the Connection precinct, or head to Tokyo Street for Japanese restaurants and specialty stores. 3. Suria KLCC

At the base of the Petronas Twin Towers sits Suria KLCC, Malaysia's most iconic shopping destination. Spanning over a million square feet with 340+ specialty stores, it's a great starting point for a fashion-and-architecture tour. Splurge on books at Books Kinokuniya, sleek sneakers at atmos, or artisanal scents at Le Labo. Families can visit Aquaria KLCC oceanarium, the Petrosains science discovery centre, and the Petronas Philharmonic Hall, home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra — then unwind in the 50-acre KLCC Park with its playground, toddler wading pool and jogging tracks.

4. Mid Valley Megamall

Mid Valley Megamall lives up to its name: 1.7 million square feet housing 630+ shops, restaurants and outlets across six floors, plus a cinema and convention centre. Fashion spans homegrown Dressing Paula to high-street giants H&M, Uniqlo and Zara, while sportswear fans will find adidas, asics, JD Sports, New Balance, Nike and Under Armour. It leans lifestyle over luxury — for that, stroll to sister mall The Gardens Mall for Bang & Olufsen, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. 5. Publika Shopping Gallery

Publika is a creative hub with an open-air piazza and outdoor park that captivates adults and kids alike. It's a space for community, arts, cultural events and markets, lively all year round. Between specialty stores selling local designs, home décor and vintage collectibles, it's also famed for its food — from Positano Risto's contemporary Italian to Chica Bonita's tacos and tequilas, plus live-music bars, izakayas and even mamak stalls.

6. Bangsar Village I & II

Fashion fans will find leading local labels like Fern, Lilit, Nelissa Hilman, Wanderlust & Co and Whimsigirl. It's on the smaller side, but a pleasure for ladies with dozens of beauty and hair salons (A Cut Above, Hammam Spa, Sothys Paris), and for families with babycare shops, Gymboree Play & Music, a Lego store and a Toys 'R' Us.
