From creative cocktails and rare wine labels to imported craft liquor and draught beer from some of the world's finest breweries, these are the bars worth your time — whether you're after a quiet wine night with friends or a cocktail with a skyline view.

1. Rakh

'Culinary cocktail' bars are rare, and one that sings with Southeast Asian savoury flavours while staying sustainable is rarer still. Rakh (styled rākh), sibling bar to Jwala, champions mindful mixology — kitchen scraps are repurposed into its cocktails (no straws!), finished with edible garnishes. The signature Rasam is an ode to the South Indian soup: house-infused vodka with herbs and seven-day fermented tomato puree, served with warm rasam foam.

2. Triptyk

Kampung Attap keeps welcoming new openings, and cocktail star Angel Ng quickly saw the potential of one of Jalan Tuba's four remaining pre-war shophouses as a culinary collective with a bar, kitchen and dining space.

The semi-zero-waste bar on Triptyk's top floor focuses on low- and no-proof cocktails and carefully curated premium spirits, making the most of every ingredient. Burung Hutan is its no-proof spin on the Malaysian tiki classic Jungle Bird.

3. Unwined

When Hsiao Tung Wei (also behind Roost) opened Unwined in APW, it was an instant hit. The bottle-shop-turned-bar keeps a few hundred natural wines on hand at any time.

4. Penrose

A bunker-like grey facade on Jalan Petaling hides a treasure trove. Led by Jon Lee, Penrose landed on Asia's 50 Best Bars in its debut year. The Rum Musa is a complex rum cocktail built from banana skin to stem, with pimento berry and tamarind.

5. Terumi

Shirmy Chan's Terumi may be the city's only women-owned and -operated bar. The third menu revolves around transformation — try the three-part East Pier, a truly unique gimlet, or the stronger Truffle Dog, a dry martini with truffle-oil vodka and parmesan.

6. Here & Now

Here & Now plays with time, place and the art of simply being. Its dozen tiki-inspired cocktails are all riffs on the daiquiri, mai tai, Jungle Bird or Piña Colada. Don't miss No. 5, the Asam — sweet with a calamansi tang and a dry sour-plum foam.

7. Three X Co

KL has always done speakeasies well. Tucked behind a barber-shop-meets-garage facade in a Bangsar mall, Three X Co is named for its three co-founders and built for dimly-lit evenings. The Balik Pulau pairs Hendrick's with clarified milk over clear ice, garnished with basil, Penang candied nutmeg and local dried ginger.

8. Joloko

The Caribbean may feel far away, but Joloko brings the vibe to you. Expect plenty of mezcal and tequila, plus a gorgeous natural wine list.

9. Reka:Bar

Behind an unassuming shoplot sits Reka:Bar, a self-described 'post-modern flavour lab'. Two menus anchor the offering — a seasonal spotlight and the signature 'Domino Effect' built on permutation, transformation and evolution. Try the Naughty Congee with spiced rum, floral amazake and Bentong ginger.

10. Bar Trigona

Trigona became the first Malaysian bar on the World's 50 Best Bars list in 2020 and has held the title of Malaysia's Best Bar for three straight years. Its 'Foraged Malaysia' menu spans 16 cocktails inspired by the country's four regions — don't miss the Kunyit Royale.

11. Whisky House

With over 500 bottles, Whisky House lives up to its name. Its ethos is simple: explore single malts and lesser-known bottlings from every corner of the world, without prejudice.

12. Monster and Beer

If you're in Taman Paramount, end your day at Monster & Beer — a craft-beer spot with at least 99 bottles on the wall and a few on tap.

13. Small Shifting Space

SSS is one of our favourite restobars, done the Chinatown way: casual, trendy and fun. The two-storey heritage shophouse pairs a delightful natural-wine list with sharing plates.

14. Nomi Tomo Saké Bar

An oldie but a goodie, Nomi Tomo is the city's first and best sake bar, with over 80 bottles from junmai and ginjo to sparkling.

15. Coley

One of KL's most popular bars, Coley is all about good cocktails, having placed on Asia's 50 Best Bars in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

16. JungleBird

Another Asia's 50 Best Bars alum, JungleBird calls itself 'Rumah Rum' and stocks over 100 light and dark rums from around the world.

17. PS150

A trip to PS150 in Chinatown is transportive, with Hong Kong-style dens, open-air spaces and an intimate bar, all anchored in Southeast Asian flavours.

18. Pahit

The cosy Pahit is devoted to gin — from classic G&Ts to inventive contemporary gin cocktails.

19. Marini's on 57

Perched on the 57th floor of Petronas 3 Tower, the views at Marini's are the real draw, backed by an Italian restaurant and cigar lounge.

20. Pisco Bar

Pisco Bar blends fiery charm with a chic, unpretentious vibe, offering a trim but inclusive list of cocktails, wine, beer and spirits alongside fusion food.

21. 61 Monarchy

An unassuming lounge for a dram or two, 61 Monarchy displays over 400 bottles of whisky from around the world.

22. The Great Beer Bar

A neighbourhood favourite for craft-beer fans, with up to eight rotating taps and a fridge packed with global brews at friendly prices.

23. Taps Beer Bar

Taps Beer Bar specialises in quality craft brews from around the world, on tap and in bottles, from IPAs and APAs to pilsners and stouts.

24. The Locker & Loft

Hidden behind a row of lockers above a shophouse, The Locker + Loft serves affordable, quirky cocktails alongside addictive finger food and spicy bites.

25. Hyde

The bartenders at Hyde excel at tailoring drinks to your taste, with homemade ingredients and blends setting its cocktails apart in a handsome speakeasy-style space.
