Sleepovers just got an upgrade. Book an overnight session at Aquaria and children aged six to 13 can bed down right next to the sharks. If you have teenagers, it's even better — sign them up (14 years and above only) for the Cage Rage experience, where they come face-to-face with the predators. Alongside regular workshops in dance, scriptwriting and acting, KLPac runs The Actors Studio Academy, Theatre for Young People and orchestra groups (including a symphonic band and string ensemble) for anyone of any age keen to dive into the creative arts.

Part nature conservation park, part zoo, Farm in the City is ideal for an outdoor family outing that both adults and children can enjoy. You'll find birds, reptiles, monkeys, rabbits, horses and more — but unlike a regular zoo, the animals aren't in cages. In this scaled-down cityscape, kids can step into the shoes of a doctor, fashion designer, banker, journalist, radio host and a dozen more professions, all simplified and made fun. Earn KidZania's currency, kidZos (used to pay for food and services inside), by flying planes in mock cockpits, anchoring news programmes or dousing fake flames with real water cannons. A few activities, like giving makeovers to other paying children, veer a little too close to adult life, but kids still pick up life skills, the value of money and teamwork along the way — role-play doesn't get more educational than this.

Take the stage at Enfiniti Academy

Founded by local thespian Tiara Jacquelina, this creative-arts academy counts Suhaili Micheline and Joanna Bessey (also the academy's director) among its instructors. Enfiniti offers theatre, drama and dance classes for adults and children alike. For basic acting skills there's a speech and drama class for ages seven to 11, while younger kids (three to six) can join Little Actors every Saturday.

Parents needn't feel left out either — adult classes cover yoga and Zumba.

Get sporty at Michael's Badminton Academy

Since opening its first centre in Taman Megah in 2002, Michael's Badminton Academy (MBA) — the brainchild of badminton enthusiast Michael Lee — has become the go-to for youngsters hoping to emulate Lee Chong Wei. After the 16-court hall in PJ, Michael added a second MBA outlet in Puchong with 32 indoor courts, later earning the title of Malaysia's biggest badminton centre. Beyond the accolades, MBA regularly runs lessons, courses and even children's camps with professional coaching and overnight stays in the centre's dormitories, on rubberised and parquet courts that frequently host international tournaments.

Scale the heights at Camp 5

Camp 5 houses the Klang Valley's most extensive rock-climbing walls, with over 1,600 square metres of roped climbing, lead climbing and bouldering. The staff are excellent with children, so if you need to slip away for a coffee or some shopping, your kids can safely be left to traverse the rocky terrain. Taster and beginner courses are available for newcomers, and kids can join the Cicak Club — a regular class where they mix with others their age and sharpen their climbing.

Learn to swim and dive at Sealantis

Established in 1996, Sealantis is home to a purpose-built pool for diving and swimming courses. The swimming course, for ages five and up, covers breathing and floating techniques, stroke correction and swimming styles. The theory and confined-water sections of the PADI-certified diving course, for ages ten and up, take place at Sealantis' 1 Utama dive centre before students head to its Tioman Island outlet to complete the course. Diving gear — buoyancy control devices, regulators, wetsuits, masks and snorkels — is sold on site.

Zip around at Skateline Malaysia

Revive the '90s skating craze at Skateline, which offers six-level training programmes for kids. Top students can progress to more exhilarating disciplines such as speed skating, inline hockey and slalom (high-skill skating between cones and obstacles). Professionally trained Inline Certification Program (ICP) instructors walk newcomers through the fundamentals with care, and the in-house pro-shop stocks everything skating-related.

Play Tarzan at Skytrex

One of Shah Alam's most popular attractions, SkyTrex is a favourite among parents whose kids have energy to burn. Younger children can test their balance on the Little Adventure course — a series of 23 challenges of varying difficulty — whizzing down the flying fox and braving the dragon bones, with each circuit taking roughly half an hour. Older kids can be let loose on the Big Adventure, a tougher treetop course of 26 challenges demanding balance, agility and a good head for heights.

The Studio also offers art classes for kids and adults.

Be a junior masterchef at Young Chefs Academy

This academy aims to teach kids the joys of cooking and experimenting with ingredients. Weekly classes train children in cooking, baking, presentation, table setting, food handling, kitchen safety and, of course, table manners. Birthday packages let kids invite friends to make pizza, ice cream, cupcakes and pasta, complete with personalised invitations, recipe cards, party decorations and finger food. Unfortunately, food fights are not encouraged.
