Sunflower Spots in Kanagawa: Zama, Kurihama, and Train-Side Fields
By the riverside, on the hilltops, and beside the train tracks — every summer, sunflowers bloom in all sorts of places across Kanagawa.

From afar, every spot looks like a vivid yellow field of flowers. But look closer and the flower size, plant height, and petal shape differ subtly from place to place. Some sunflowers grow taller than a person with huge blooms, while other varieties flower right at a child's eye level — the variety is remarkable.
Here we introduce Kanagawa's distinctive sunflower scenery, along with insights from gardening designer Masashi Mikami, who serves as lecturer and navigator on NHK E-tele's "Shumi no Engei," on the sunflowers found at each spot.
Zama Sunflower Field: 550,000 Blooms Reaching Human Height
One of Kanagawa's most iconic sunflower scenes is the Zama Sunflower Field, spreading along the Sagami River basin.
At the Zama City Sunflower Festival held every August, visitors can enjoy around 550,000 sunflowers planted across roughly 5.5 hectares combining the Zama and Yotsuya venues.
In recent years, the main variety at the Zama venue has been the "Hybrid Sunflower," which grows 150–200 cm tall. With yellow flowers crowning stems that reach human height, walking the paths feels like being wrapped in walls of sunflowers.
The Yotsuya venue, meanwhile, plants varieties such as the deep-orange "Vincent" and the 70–100 cm "Sunspot," including blooms that flower near a child's eye level — offering a very different flower scene from the Zama venue.
ISIX Mairi Flower Field: A Community-Tended Riverside Meadow Under a Wide Sky
The "ISIX Mairi Flower Field" in Hiratsuka is another place to meet sunflowers along the Sagami River.
A flower field of about 30,000 square meters spreads across the riverbank, maintained by local volunteers who handle planting and weeding. Local kindergarteners and their parents sometimes join the sowing, and feeling the community's care behind the beautiful blooms is part of this spot's charm.
On the riverbank with few tall buildings around, a wide sky stretches over the sunflowers. On clear days, wild birds such as skylarks flit around the field — you can enjoy not just the flowers but the riverside breeze and the openness of the sky.
At the same time of year, zinnias often bloom too, their red, pink, and orange flowers adding color to the sunflower yellow — a richly colored, expansive flower scene quite unlike Zama's sea of gold.
Kurihama Flower World: A Three-Dimensional Sunflower Field Rising from Valley to Hill
The sunflowers of Kurihama Flower World in Yokosuka offer a view quite unlike the flat fields of Zama and Mairi.
Making use of the natural terrain's elevation changes, the sunflower field spreads across the roughly 18,000-square-meter Poppy and Cosmos Garden running from the entrance up to the summit. Because the sunflowers bloom along the hillside slopes, the field looks a little different whether you gaze up from the valley side or look back after climbing the paths.
The park also features swing-style benches and photo spots with frames that capture the sunflowers like paintings. Walking paths and smartphone stands are set up within the flower field, so you can feel the sunflowers up close while enjoying photography.
Kushihashi Sunflower Field: Giant Blooms and the Odakyu Line
Among Kanagawa's sunflower spots, the "Kushihashi Sunflower Field" in Isehara lets you enjoy the scenery along the railway tracks.
The hallmark of this spot is framing the sunflowers together with the trains passing just beyond them in a single photo. With good timing, you might even capture a Romancecar overlapping the sunflowers alongside ordinary trains, making it a popular photo location.
Do you make the foreground's large blooms the star, or capture the flower field and train cars as one scene? The view changes depending on where you stand and your eye level.
The train passes in just an instant. Waiting for that moment while gazing at the flowers' orientation, the summer sky, and the drifting clouds is a pleasure unique to this place.
* When visiting, please do not approach the tracks or off-limits areas, and take care not to damage surrounding farmland or flowers.
