What is the Yokohama & Kawasaki area like?

The Yokohama & Kawasaki area is the most populous part of Kanagawa Prefecture and the economic heart of the prefecture, home to numerous commercial facilities and restaurants. It is popular not only for sightseeing but also as a highly convenient place to live.

Yokohama retains the atmosphere of its days as a newly opened port while new landmarks appear one after another — a retro-modern city where past and future coexist. The open waterfront views unique to a port town are beautiful, and a rich, international atmosphere fills the air.

Kawasaki's coastal area developed as an industrial city and is home to many internationally renowned companies. Inland, the vast Ikuta Ryokuchi park offers beautiful nature that changes with the seasons. Though a major metropolis, it still holds nature-rich spots in its suburbs — a truly charming area.

Yokohama Chinatown (Yokohama): Japan's largest Chinatown, lined with more than 600 shops. About half are restaurants, and you can enjoy hopping between takeout delights. Pick out cute Chinese goods, snap photos in a qipao, and fully experience Chinese culture!

Yamashita Park (Yokohama): A waterfront park that could be called the symbol of Yokohama. Relax while gazing at the Bay Bridge and the ships passing through the port. The luxury liner Hikawa Maru, once called the "Queen of the North Pacific," is moored in the park and can be toured during the day. The park is also famous for its roses; the "Future Rose Garden" beside Hikawa Maru makes a photogenic contrast. Built on land reclaimed from the Great Kanto Earthquake's rubble, the park is dotted with monuments, and nearby lie the Red Brick Warehouse, Osanbashi Pier, and Chinatown.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (Yokohama): A historic red-brick building from the late Meiji era. Today it is a popular sightseeing spot with restaurants, cafés, shops, and a variety of events. At night it is illuminated, adding a romantic atmosphere.

Kawasaki Daishi (Heiken-ji) (Kawasaki): A temple famous for blessings of protection from misfortune, household safety, and traffic safety. Long revered as the "Daishi of warding off evil," its New Year's visitors rank among the highest in Japan. The Nakamise-dori shopping street, lined with warm, friendly shops, is also a must-see.

Nihon Minka-en (Kawasaki Municipal Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum): This museum displays 25 buildings relocated from across eastern Japan, including traditional folk houses, a watermill, and a kabuki stage. Located in the forest of Ikuta Ryokuchi with no utility poles or buildings in sight, it feels like stepping back in time. Enjoy soba at the gassho-style "Shirakawa-go" house, or try indigo dyeing at the Traditional Craft Hall.

A leisurely stroll through the retro-modern port town

As a port town that welcomed foreign culture early on, Yokohama still holds many retro buildings. Yokohama Yamate is an exotic district that developed as a foreign settlement; explore seven Western-style houses including Berrick Hall and the Diplomat's House. The "Yokohama Three Towers" — the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Building, Yokohama Customs, and the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall — stand with a sense of weight, as if watching over the city.

Yokohama Iekei Ramen: Characterized by a rich pork-bone soy-sauce broth and chewy medium-thick noodles, enjoy the deep, full-bodied flavor at an authentic Yokohama shop.

Sanma-men: A starchy noodle dish stir-fried with pork, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms, and cabbage. The crunchy vegetables and rich, thickened sauce meld perfectly with the noodles.

New Tan Tan Men: Said to have originated by adapting Chinese dan dan noodles into a hearty version. A pork-bone salt broth is mixed with ground meat and garlic, mellowed with beaten egg, and finished with a perfect kick of coarse-ground chili — addictive!

Ariake's "Yokohama Harbour": A popular chestnut cake shaped like a ship, the harmony of rich chestnut paste with whole chestnuts and a light, soft castella sponge is exquisite. Enjoy the moist texture and the chestnut flavor that spreads through your mouth.

Bashamichi Jubankan's "Biscuit": A Western confection of crisp biscuit with a refined, lightly sweet cream. Made with richly flavored butter and wheat flour, each piece is hand-baked daily. Available in lemon, chocolate, and peanut flavors!
