Two royal palaces from next month to host scenic moonlight tours

Autumn night tours of two of Seoul's most iconic royal palaces will begin next month at Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung.

The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) announced on Aug. 18 that Gyeongbokgung Palace Nighttime Viewing will run from Sept. 2 to Oct. 2.

The program features traditional court music and dance, with musicians from the National Gugak Center staging 15 performances at Sujeongjeon Hall on Sept. 2-5, 9-12 and 16-19, plus Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

The Changdeokgung Moonlight Tour, one of the palace's signature evening events, runs from Sept. 10 to Oct. 17. Visitors can stroll through the palace grounds and rear garden while carrying a cheongsachorong — a traditional lantern made by joining red and blue silk shades around a candle — and listening to commentary from expert guides.

The program also includes a traditional music concert, photo opportunities with performers of "Royal Stroll," a reenactment of a Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) royal procession, and traditional tea and refreshments.

Gyeongbokgung tour tickets go on sale on a first-come, first-served basis through Nol Ticket (https://nol.interpark.com) from Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. to Oct. 1 at 11:59 p.m., with a combined 3,000 tickets per day and a limit of four per person.

Foreign visitors can buy up to 300 tickets per day (two per person) at the on-site ticket office by presenting a passport or other identification.

Changdeokgung tour reservations use a lottery system. Applications are accepted on Ticketlink (www.ticketlink.co.kr) from Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. to Aug. 26 at 11:59 p.m., with a limit of 28 visitors per session. Winners will be announced on the official KHS website from 5 p.m. on Aug. 28.

Foreign visitors can join tours in English, Chinese and Japanese on Sept. 20 and 27 and Oct. 4 and 11. First-come, first-served reservations open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 28 through Creatrip (www.creatrip.com).
