Located in the fertile Ishikari Plain, Iwamizawa is renowned for its rice production. The highlight of this vibrant autumn festival is the Giant Mortar Mochi Pounding, a dramatic tradition using one of the world's largest mortars, measuring 2.2 m in diameter and weighing 5.5 t. In the traditional Yoitomake style, participants work together to raise a 200 kg wooden mallet by rope before dropping it into the mortar from about 5 m high.
As the deep thud of the mallet echoes through the grounds, spirited chants and rhythmic taiko drums fill the air, bringing the festival to life. Visitors can enjoy freshly pounded mochi served in warm sweet red bean soup, a delicious taste of the region's agricultural heritage.
The festival also features a mochi-throwing event for health and longevity, along with the lively Hyappei Market, where visitors can sample local specialties and festival foods. It is a spectacular way to experience the traditions and community spirit of autumn in Hokkaido.
