Free Hongdae Photo Exhibition "The Eve of Enlistment - Soldier"

Photographer Kang Jae-gu explores time, memory, and human identity through photography. Drawing on his own experience as a South Korean soldier, he has been working on a military series since 2002 for more than 20 years. Within the social institution of South Korea's conscription system, he has steadily documented the psychological and life changes young men experience — as someone who lived through the same journey himself. From young men about to enlist, to privates, active-duty soldiers, and reservists, he captures how one person's life changes over time through a long-term lens, combining portraiture, archives, and records of time into a project that goes beyond simple documentary. At KT&G Sangsangmadang in Hongdae, he presents The Eve of Enlistment, a portrait project of young men on the verge of enlisting.
