Best Portuguese Egg Tarts in Macau: 10 Must-Try Bakeries

Macau has long been a favourite getaway for Hongkongers. Besides visiting landmarks like the Ruins of St. Paul's, the Guanyin statue and A-Ma Temple, tasting local food is a highlight of any Macau day trip — and no Macau food list is complete without the iconic Portuguese egg tart (pastel de nata). Beyond the famous Lord Stow's Bakery and Margaret's Café e Nata, here are 10 popular egg tart shops in Macau to bookmark and try.

1. Lord Stow's Bakery

The original Macau egg tart, Lord Stow's Bakery opened in 1989 and sells a wide range of baked goods, with its Portuguese egg tart being the must-try item — expect long queues every time. The shop modified the traditional lard-based recipe, boosting the egg yolk and cream content and adding butter to the custard for a crispier, sweeter and smoother tart. The thin, flaky shell is lightly caramelised with a blowtorch — sweet but not cloying.

Address: 1 Rua da Tassara, Coloane Village. Hours: Daily 07:00–22:00

2. Margaret's Café e Nata

Margaret's and Lord Stow's share the same origin, both created by Mr. Andrew Stow; after the couple divorced, the shop was renamed Margaret's. The tarts are baked to perfection — crisp on the outside, soft within, with a golden, crunchy surface and a silky, not-too-sweet custard that blends delicate egg aroma with rich buttery notes.

Address: Shop 17B, Gin Lei Building, Rua do Comandante Mata e Oliveira. Hours: Mon–Fri 08:30–16:30, Sat–Sun 10:00–18:00 (closed Wed)

3. BAMU Bakery

BAMU is an up-and-coming Macau bakery whose signature is the caramel puff-pastry egg tart: a golden shell topped with a layer of caramel, with rich custard aroma that pairs perfectly with the caramel. Each tart costs MOP 12.

Address: 1 Travessa de São Paulo, Macau. Tel: 6208 5050. Hours: 08:00–17:00

4. Cuppa Coffee

Founded in 2008 in Taipa by Portugal-born Cristiana Figueiredo, who has lived in Macau since 2001, Cuppa Coffee serves all-natural Portuguese breads, pastries, cookies and sandwiches. Its egg tarts have a crisp, crumbly shell with a rich buttery aroma and a slightly sweeter profile — best enjoyed with a coffee.

Address: G/F, 104–106 Rua de Fernão Mendes Pinto, Taipa Village. Hours: Daily 07:30–19:30

5. Pufa (葡啡)

Tucked away in an alley, Pufa is a Macau bakery that uses the finest Portuguese ingredients and bakes fresh breads, burgers and pizzas daily. Its egg tarts lean sweet, with a buttery shell and a rich, smooth custard.

6. Goat Baker

Goat Bakers is an innovative bakery whose egg tarts are made with Japanese Ran'ou eggs and French butter, giving them a rich, fragrant flavour. Priced at MOP 12 each.

7. Céleste — Ice-Fire Egg Tart
