Rome may empty out, but it never goes quiet: Ferragosto in the capital brings a rich programme of events for Romans and tourists staying in the city. What's more, this year the holiday falls on a Saturday, meaning a whole weekend of unmissable events.

What to do for Ferragosto in Rome? From open museums to theme park parties, live music and special late-night openings, RomaToday has selected 11 must-see events for Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August in Rome and its surroundings.

Museums and Archaeological Parks Open on Ferragosto

Ferragosto in Rome can be a day dedicated to history and culture. On Saturday 15 August, state museums, archaeological parks and cultural sites — including castles, abbeys, monumental complexes, villas and gardens — will remain open at standard admission rates. Visits will take place during regular opening hours and according to the access arrangements established by each venue, including reservations where required.

Colosseum and Pantheon: Evening Openings

This year's Ferragosto promises an extra dose of culture. In addition to the openings listed above, both the Colosseum and the Pantheon will be accessible. Italy's Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism have launched an initiative to keep major monuments and museums open up to four hours beyond their usual closing times. The trial runs throughout August and, in Rome, involves the Colosseum and the Pantheon. Specifically, the Colosseum will stay open on Fridays and Saturdays from 7:45 PM to 11:30 PM, while the Pantheon will be open from 7 PM to 11 PM, except on Thursdays.

Chiostro del Bramante Open on Ferragosto

The Chiostro del Bramante isn't taking a holiday: even on 15 August, visitors can enter this Roman museum and see the exhibition "Flowers. Meravigliosa Natura" (Flowers: Wonderful Nature), now in its final weeks. This summer represents the last chance to immerse yourself in a journey through ancient and contemporary art, a narrative entirely dedicated to the wonder and fragility of the natural world.

Ferragosto at the Planetarium

Rome's Planetarium reopens and presents its programme over the Ferragosto weekend too. A rich calendar of events among stars, planets, space probes and celestial phenomena, with a schedule alternating scientific outreach, immersive shows and family-friendly sessions. On Saturday 15 August, the programme features: "Return to the Stars", "Doctor Stellarium Discovers the Moon" and "The Lovers' Sky". On Sunday: "Interstellar — The Voyage of the Voyager Probes", "Round and Round the Planets" and "The Starry Night".

Ferragosto at Testaccio Estate

Testaccio Estate's August programme continues. On 15 August, a special event features the traditional Ferragosto Watermelon Party (Cocomerata di Ferragosto), accompanied by a DJ set from Larry C. entirely devoted to the great Italian hits of the 1990s and 2000s — an evening blending popular tradition, music and conviviality.

Ferragosto at Cinecittà World

Cinecittà World, together with the adjacent AquaWorld and RomaWorld, keeps summer alive for those staying in Rome, with events scheduled even on Ferragosto day. Pools, water games and adrenaline-pumping rides, plus on Ferragosto day Cinecittà World hosts a major party with the Bonita Pool Party — one of Italy's most popular reggaeton, hip-hop and urban music formats. The Cinepiscina (Cinema Pool) will feature three DJ sets with a foam party, group dance entertainment and Zumba classes. AquaWorld promises a Ferragosto of music and fun.

Ferragosto at Luneur Park

Ferragosto for children aged 0 to 10 is celebrated at Luneur Park. The day begins in the Splash Zone, with dedicated children's slides and relaxation areas, continuing in the afternoon with rides on the park's attractions. In the evening, ageless fun takes over with Luna Village, Luneur Park's free evening festival which, from 7 PM onwards, offers a food court, music and shows for the whole family. On 15 August, the spotlight is on 1990s music with Dam James, while on 16 August the Ladisa company takes centre stage, ready to enchant audiences with a unique visual and artistic experience.

Ferragosto at MagicLand

MagicLand offers a double Ferragosto celebration on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August. Kicking off the festivities on Friday 14 August is Ulisse Marciano — DJ, producer and the official voice of MagicLand — for a musical journey through international hits and an irresistible rhythm. The following day, Saturday 15 August, the baton passes to DJ Matrix, with a show inspired by the atmosphere of Italy's Après Ski scene. Two Foam Parties until midnight are also on the programme. For the occasion, the park's more than 40 attractions will stay open late into the evening.

Weekend Concerts at Terrazza Tevere

The summer concerts at Terrazza Tevere continue. During Ferragosto week, the programme is rich and varied, offering blues, jazz, rock and more. On Saturday 15 August, the River Grill stage will be taken over by the electrifying energy of the Lady G Evolution — more than just a Lady Gaga tribute. On vocals is Evelyn, a charismatic performer with an impressive vocal range, backed by a band of professional musicians combining quality, grit and extraordinary team spirit. On Sunday 16 August it's the turn of Los Soneros Road, a group active in Italy for over twenty years and, for the past decade, a regular fixture in the clubs and piazzas of Rome and its province.

"Ferragosto è un Calvario" Comedy Show

Colombo Park hosts "Ferragosto è un Calvario" (Ferragosto is a Calvary), scheduled for 15 August as part of the "Estate ai Parchi" (Summer in the Parks) series. Five stars of Italian comedy take to the stage for a show packed with laughter and improvisation. Performing are Marko Tana, Oscar Biglia, Mago Alivernini, Claudio Sciara and Dany Bra — artists spanning stand-up comedy, comic magic, sketches and improvised moments.

The Fairy-Tale Village at Torre Alfina Castle

The Fairy-Tale Castle arrives at Torre Alfina. From Sunday 16 August, the castle opens its doors to families, children and dreamers of all ages for an immersive experience organised by @madovevivonoicartoni. Actors, costumes and set designs will guide audiences through the castle's halls, courtyards and passageways, amid fantastical encounters, music, surprises and an itinerant story in which both young and old become the protagonists.
