Miyanaga Takehiko Memorial Museum: 'Iki Isoku' Exhibition in Hadano, Kanagawa
The Japanese concept of iki — refined elegance, understated chic — is inseparable from any discussion of Miyanaga Takehiko (1919–1987). It defined not only his paintings but also his debonair persona and his very approach to life.

This exhibition takes iki as its central motif and explores Miyanaga's artistry through three interconnected lenses: iki (sophistication), iki (spirit and ambition), and iki (breath — the living pulse behind every brushstroke).
Miyanaga was a versatile creative force who moved fluidly between fine art and commercial design. His work remains universally compelling and crystal-clear in its execution, radiating a timeless brilliance that continues to captivate viewers. Living through the turbulence of the Showa era, he observed society with a sharp, discerning eye and channelled his relentless creative drive into a distinctive artistic voice — one that added a touch of glamour to his age.
The exhibition brings together approximately 70 pieces, including 16 oil paintings, 7 posters, 8 original cover illustrations, 7 preparatory studies and rough sketches — some on public display for the first time — along with around 10 items related to the Odakyu Electric Railway. Together, they offer a rare window into the creative process, from initial concept to finished masterpiece.
