Watch Classic Films Under the Stars at MoMA's Iconic Sculpture Garden This Summer
New York's Museum of Modern Art is transforming its celebrated outdoor space into a summer cinema, offering a cultural experience that's hard to beat.

While NYC has no shortage of outdoor film screenings throughout the warmer months, MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden delivers an unmatched setting — surrounded by masterpieces from Picasso, Miró, and the museum's own architectural beauty.
Every Wednesday evening through late summer, the Midtown institution will screen a curated lineup of genre classics, film restorations, and documentaries in one of Manhattan's most enchanting under-the-radar spots. The series launched tonight, August 5, and the opening selection makes a powerful case for Denzel Washington as cinema's ultimate romantic lead.
The debut feature is Mira Nair's Mississippi Masala (1991), a richly layered romance starring Washington opposite Sarita Choudhury. The 8pm screening comes with a special bonus: both director Nair and lead actress Choudhury will be on hand to introduce the film in person.
Set primarily in the American South, the story follows Mina (Choudhury), a young woman from a Ugandan Indian family that resettled in Mississippi following the 1972 expulsion of Asians from Uganda. While her parents dream of returning to their homeland, Mina has built a life in Mississippi — until she falls for Demetrius, a Black carpet cleaner portrayed by a charismatic, thirty-something Washington.
The result is a compelling exploration of love caught between race, cultural displacement, family duty, and the search for belonging, anchored by a magnetic Washington performance at the height of his leading-man powers.
Can't make it tonight? Two more screenings are lined up: on Wednesday, August 19, MoMA presents Leon Gast's Our Latin Thing, followed on September 2 by Finnish auteur Aki Kaurismäki's Le Havre (2011). This French-language gem follows an aging shoeshiner in the port city of Le Havre who crosses paths with a young undocumented immigrant fleeing the authorities.
Spend your summer Wednesday on the couch — or beneath the stars, surrounded by some of the finest modern art ever created. The choice is an easy one.
