A Free Circus Festival Is Taking Over Bryant Park Next Week — Massive Trampoline, Aerial Acts and More

New York has no shortage of places to watch people fly through the air — though usually they’re strapped into harnesses on Broadway or attempting something inadvisable on the subway. Next weekend, Bryant Park is bringing in the professionals.

On Saturday, August 29, the Midtown green space transforms into an open-air circus for Parallel Exit’s Sunset Circus, a free hour-long show featuring aerialists, jugglers, acrobats and comedians — and, perhaps most importantly, a massive trampoline set up right on the lawn.

The performance is part of Bryant Park’s free Picnic Performances series and runs from 5pm to 6pm, with no tickets or reservations required. Just show up, claim a patch of grass and get ready to watch seven circus artists bend their bodies in ways that would send most of us straight to urgent care.

Sunset Circus is produced by Parallel Exit, a New York-based physical theater company known for blending circus arts with comedy and storytelling. Its performers have worked with some of the biggest names in the circus world, including Cirque du Soleil and Big Apple Circus, and the Bryant Park show mixes aerial acts, juggling, acrobatics and physical comedy into a theatrical production built for audiences of all ages.

If watching people somersault through the air works up an appetite, you can turn the outing into a full picnic. Bryant Park supplies hundreds of free blankets and its signature bistro chairs for Picnic Performances, while food and drinks are available from vendors around the park.

The circus is just one piece of Bryant Park’s late-summer lineup: the night before — Friday, August 28 — the park hosts its free Accordion Festival, and September brings performances from the Asian American Arts Alliance, a Brass Festival, Dance Party All-Stars and the American Symphony Orchestra.

But first up: seven circus performers, one Midtown lawn and a trampoline big enough to make your childhood backyard setup look deeply unimpressive.
