1. Moutou
Moutou has quickly become the beating heart of KL's creative DIY scene. Perched on the top floor and rooftop of a pre-war shophouse on Jalan Panggong — formerly Theatre Street, one of the city's oldest roads — this artist-run space hosts everything from ambient to punk to psychedelic rock, plus DJs, art exhibitions, film screenings, talks, and workshops.
2. Jao Tim
Housed on the top floor of a 1910 heritage shop lot in Chinatown, Jao Tim (Cantonese for 'hotel') has filled the gap in Malaysia's jazz scene. With capacity for 100, the stylish space hosts jazz acts, jam sessions, and even swing classes, complete with a food and drinks menu.
3. fono
Calling itself "a listening room", fono has hosted intimate, stripped-down sets to psychedelic rock, audio-visual performances, and DJs spinning disco, funky boogie, and experimental electronic since opening in early 2018. Book ahead — capacity is limited.
4. Pisco Bar
On Jalan Mesui along bustling Changkat, Pisco is a go-to restobar with great tapas, tacos, cocktails, and happy hour. DJs rule the weekends upstairs, while Thursdays are reserved for live music and plenty of dancing.
5. Rumah Api
Ask anyone — Rumah Api (Malay for 'house of fire') is the home of DIY punk in KL. This all-ages, collective-run alternative space has hosted some of the region's best punk acts. Most weekends, catch emerging bands or living legends in the room.
6. Drum Asia Live
In Desa Sri Hartamas, this understated spot hosts emerging and established local indie acts — folk, psychedelic, math rock, R&B singer-songwriters, spoken word poets, and DJs. It also doubles as an affordable jamming studio.
7. Zepp Kuala Lumpur
A subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan, Zepp has fast become one of KL's best mid-sized venues since opening in 2022. Its 2,500-capacity hall with state-of-the-art AV technology has hosted Cigarettes After Sex, Honne, Jack White, Lany, and Rex Orange County.
8. Taps Beer Bar
One of the city's best craft beer bars, Taps is also a mainstay of KL's live music scene, hosting acoustic performers and singer-songwriters from Thursday to Sunday nights. Sip on craft beers and sing along to covers.
