Malaysia's New Passport Launches in 2026: 10-Year Validity and 94 Security Features

Already one of the world's most powerful travel documents, the Malaysian passport is getting a major overhaul in 2026. The distinctive deep red booklet will pack 94 security features — nearly double the current 49. As of 4 June 2026, the official application launch date has yet to be announced. Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban has urged the public not to rush into replacing valid passports.

Where to Get Your New Passport First

The Immigration Department is rolling out the new passport in stages, starting at four locations:

1. Immigration Headquarters, Putrajaya

2. Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office

3. Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Passport Office, Wangsa Maju

4. Shah Alam Immigration Office

A nationwide rollout will follow, allowing renewals at your nearest immigration office.

Fees and Validity

The new passport is available to Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above, with a 10-year validity period. Application fees have been adjusted from the previous 5-year passport rates:

• Adults (18–59): RM350

• Senior citizens (60+): RM175

• Adults (18+) with valid OKU card: Free

• Immigration Department officers and staff: Free

Replacement fees for lost or damaged passports also increase progressively: adults pay RM550 for the first replacement, RM850 for the second, and RM1,350 for the third and beyond.

What's New in Security

While a comprehensive list hasn't been released, the new passport will feature additional holograms, ultraviolet (UV) printing, hidden visual elements, specialised security threads woven into the passport stitching, and other forensic-grade features — all designed to fortify the document against tampering and forgery.

Should You Upgrade?

If your current passport still has more than six months of validity, there's absolutely no need to switch to the new version. Existing passports remain fully valid until their printed expiry date. This staged approach also helps keep the system running smoothly for those who genuinely need urgent renewals or first-time documents.
