Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Museum Access
Visitors to Vancouver this autumn can experience a unique look inside the Museum of Vancouver (MOV) through its limited series of Austerity Tours. Designed to reveal the hidden operational challenges caused by long-term funding stagnation, the guided walkthroughs offer access to restricted off-limits areas, giving guests a rare glimpse into the museum's day-to-day survival strategies.

What to Expect on the Tour
Rather than polished displays, these tours highlight real-world compromises, including leak-catching buckets, a vintage iPod utilized to power gallery exhibitions, Vancouver's oldest continuously operating freezer, and even an ant-filled hallway depending on weather conditions. Participants will have the chance to engage directly with the specialized team responsible for protecting Canada's largest civic collection of objects. Additionally, the venue's fabrication crew will demonstrate how they construct new exhibitions at a fraction of standard industry costs while discussing visions for a potential revitalized civic museum.
Event Dates and Reservation Details
The weekly one-hour tours run on four consecutive Thursdays: September 24, October 1, October 8, and October 15, 2026, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Admission is organized on a sliding scale by donation, ranging from $5 to $50 plus applicable fees and taxes. Because capacity for these special walkthroughs is restricted, prior RSVPs are mandatory.
Visitor Location
The Museum of Vancouver is located at 1100 Chestnut Street in Greater Vancouver. Timed to coincide with the 2026 municipal election period, the program aims to raise public awareness about safeguarding irreplaceable local cultural heritage.
