Film and art enthusiasts visiting Vancouver this autumn can catch a special cultural event as part of the VIFF LIVE 2026 programme, curated by Jarrett Martineau. Co-presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), a thirtieth anniversary screening of the speculative documentary The Last Angel of History will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Film & Live Performance Highlights
Directed by visionary filmmaker and artist John Akomfrah, co-founder of the Black Audio Film Collective, the 1996 film examines the intersection of Pan-African culture, science fact, and science fiction. It traces the musical legacy of Afrofuturism from its origins during the Transatlantic Slave Trade through to techno and jungle music.
The event opens with a live improvisational performance by Speaker Music, the music alias of rhythmanalyst, writer, and musician DeForrest Brown Jr. Following the film, Brown will join acclaimed interdisciplinary artists, writers, and theorists Kodwo Eshun and Anjalika Sagar—founders of the UK artist collective The Otolith Group—for a moderated conversation.

Venue & Ticket Details
The screening and live discussion will run from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the VIFF Centre – Vancity Theatre, located at 1181 Seymour Street in Vancouver. Tickets for the event are sold directly through VIFF.
Ongoing Exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery
Visitors seeking to explore more of John Akomfrah's work can also head to the Vancouver Art Gallery. His acclaimed 2015 three-channel film installation, Vertigo Sea, is currently showing as part of the Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change exhibition, which runs through January 10, 2027.
