Vancouvers Aritzia Warehouse Sale: Dos and Dons From a Hesitant Shopper

Vancouver's Aritzia Warehouse Sale is officially on, with the Friends & Family Sale kicking off a day early — and the lineup already snaking behind the Vancouver Convention Centre is genuinely something to see. Seasoned warehouse sale veterans probably saw it coming; for newbies like us, Vancouver's commitment to the deal-snagging craft was next level.

A security team member confirmed on arrival that the queue stretched all the way back to The Westin Bayshore — at 9 a.m. sharp.

If you're averse to crowds but still want in on the deals (everything is 50 to 90 per cent off), here's a breakdown of what to expect, plus a few pointers that might help.

What to know before you go

First things first: if you've never been (or need a refresher), don't stress. Signage and staff are everywhere to point you in the right direction.

Outside, the process is straightforward. Wait in line, reach the front of the Vancouver Convention Centre West, take the escalator down to level one and wait by the entrance. Spot the giant Aritzia shopping bag and you've found the entrance/exit.

How long is the lineup?

In a word: long. Around 9:15 a.m. we chatted with people near the front who said they'd been waiting since 4 a.m. — and we're sure some of those already inside had spent the night in line. Overnight hopefuls are a recurring tradition here.

Whats it like inside this years sale?

On entry you'll pass a bag check area, where shoppers with larger bags are asked to leave their belongings while they shop.

Reusable bags are on hand for hauling your finds. Fair warning: watching people drag bags and bags of clothes around is disorienting at first, but once you lock in, it becomes background noise.

Where do I start?

As first-timers in years, we had no idea where to begin — there are racks and racks of clothing. Having a list of items you're hunting for helps a lot.

All the Super Puffs are to the right, so that's a solid starting point if you (or someone you know) need a warm winter coat. Long versions are currently $175 — a great deal against a retail price of nearly $400 — and the shorter styles cost even less, in a range of fun colours beyond classic black.

When you start to feel overwhelmed, pull out that notes-app list. What do you truly need? What are nice-to-haves? Are you shopping for gifts?

Sizing is scattered throughout, though you'll find clusters of the same size.

When in doubt, consult the list. It keeps you focused and stops you buying things you'll never wear.

Are there changing rooms?

In true Aritzia Warehouse Sale fashion, there are a couple of large changing areas (labelled fitting rooms), though they're not private. There are big mirrors in the middle, so shoppers can sort through their bags and try things on in a designated spot.

That said, plenty of shoppers simply pull over at the sides of the racks to try things on.

Where are the washrooms?

There are no washrooms inside the sale itself, but you can pop out to the all-gender ones on level two of the Convention Centre West.

Which coffee shops are nearby?

If you're committing to the lines and the rack-scouring, coffee and pastries feel pretty essential.

A handful of the closest cafes around the Convention Centre:

  • Giovane Caffé (great espresso drinks, sandwiches and desserts)

  • The Golden Horn Turkish Bakery & Cafe (closest in proximity; traditional Turkish pastries and coffee)

  • Guffo Café (coffee, pastries and a cosy atmosphere)

  • 93 Coffee Stand (Japanese cafe with coffee, matcha and other teas)

  • Koffie (inside the Bentall Centre; the breakfast sandwich is a standout)

  • Deville Coffee (plenty of seating; food and coffee)

How else can I make the most of the sale?

The Aritzia Warehouse Sale is an annual in-person experience, but you can always shop the online sale section if you'd rather skip the crowds.

And if you play your cards right, you might spot an influx of Aritzia wear at thrift and consignment stores like Turnabout in the coming weeks, as people pass along finds that didn't work out.

Other do's and don'ts for this year's sale

Just our opinion, but here are the big takeaways:

  • Do inspect items thoroughly for stains, tears or snags in the fabric.

  • Do bring only a small bag if you can — it saves time at bag check.

  • Do use the washroom before entering. Your bladder will thank you.

  • Do keep a water bottle on hand (at least in line) to stay hydrated — you might spend longer inside than planned.

  • Don't expect a private corner to try things on. It's chaotic, and that's the name of the game.

  • Don't push past people to grab an item. There's plenty to go around, with new stock added daily.

  • Don't duck under the stanchions (the belt barriers in the purchase section), even when the queue is empty.

A few more reminders
