2026漫遊日本紅楓季

Hiratsuka Sea Terrace opened in October 2025 on the site of a former municipal pool — the Ryujo-ga-oka Pool, established in 1937 (Showa 12). A rare pool fed directly by seawater, it was cherished by locals for 76 years until it closed in August 2013 due to ageing.

The brand-new Hiratsuka Sea Terrace that rose in its place is a coastal park where you can gaze out over Sagami Bay toward Mount Fuji, Enoshima and Izu, and enjoy a rich variety of dining and shopping made with local ingredients — a much-talked-about new leisure spot.

Here's our on-the-ground report on this new attraction.

Hiratsuka Sea Terrace highlights

✓ Ocean views from the seaside terrace and observation terrace

✓ Lawn plaza and sports field

✓ No-fuss BBQ at Grill Pier

✓ Gourmet and shopping in the marché building

✓ Spacious parking

Ocean views from the seaside and observation terraces

The biggest draw of Hiratsuka Sea Terrace is its ocean view — a scene only Shonan can offer, with Sagami Bay stretching from Enoshima to Izu and Mount Fuji beyond. The deck of the seaside terrace extends right to the sand so you can get close to the coastal vegetation, while a flight of stairs to the roof of the entrance building leads to the observation terrace, an open space overlooking the whole park and the horizon — the perfect spot to catch sunrise and sunset. (An elevator is available, making it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.)

Lawn plaza, sports field and event place

The 23,878-square-metre grounds include a large lawn plaza, its greenery set against the sea — plenty of room for children to run around.

The sports field can be used for all kinds of activities, from dance practice to sports, all under the open sky with the sea breeze on your face.

The event place serves as a community hub, hosting local festivals, weekend markets and more. There are also two outdoor showers and foot-wash stations, handy after surfing or playing on the shore.

No-fuss BBQ at Grill Pier

Nothing says "beach" like a barbecue. At Grill Pier, you can enjoy a full BBQ without bringing a thing — no ingredients, no equipment. With 96 seats, it comfortably fits groups of any size, and alongside the full BBQ menu there's even an all-you-can-drink course.

Gourmet and shopping in the marché building

Hiratsuka Sea Terrace isn't just a beach park with ocean views and BBQ — it's also packed with Shonan-style gourmet and shopping.

The marché building on the east side houses ten restaurants and one general-goods shop, from locally caught seafood and burgers by a popular local Hawaiian café to Japanese sweets.

□ N's Chiffon: known for its fluffy, moist and springy chiffon cakes in flavours like chocolate, hojicha and seasonal fruit, plus roll cakes, pound cakes and drinks. The morning set (chiffon cake plus a drink) is a hit with local regulars on their morning strolls, and there's even a dog-friendly chiffon cake you can enjoy with your pet on the terrace. (The morning set is available once opening prep is complete.)

□ Grands Seaside: a general-goods shop selling accessories and small items made by members of Grands Hiratsuka, an employment-support facility, with a focus on "enjoying the work." One-of-a-kind orange-dyed bags and T-shirts have a distinct character, alongside resin pens and flower charms you can't resist picking up.

Spacious parking

Hiratsuka Sea Terrace sits right along National Route 134, making it an easy stop during a day of sightseeing.

The east first car park has 73 spaces and the west second car park 12 (including two wheelchair-accessible spaces). With plenty of local visitors, bicycle parking is generous too — 45 spaces on the east side and 26 on the west — and there's dedicated motorcycle parking for riders. Bicycle rental and the "Easy Roller" (a pedal- and battery-free ride you propel by moving your legs side to side), popular overseas, are also available.

Our impressions

Hiratsuka Sea Terrace is easy to reach by bike or bus as part of a Shonan trip. It's about a 30-minute walk from the north exit of Hiratsuka Station, so on a fine day you can stroll over from the station, or rent a bicycle for a more leisurely ride.

Because it stands on the site of a pool long loved by residents, even as a park it remains a casual place for locals to gather — mainly walkers and joggers in the morning and evening, with tourists more visible on weekends.

It's a place to enjoy the changing face of Shonan's seaside through every season: a breezy, quintessential Shonan summer, a calm autumn leisure season, and from winter into early spring, crisp air and a beautifully snow-capped Mount Fuji. Grab some tasty local food to go and savour it against this superb backdrop.

Note: shop information for the marché building is current as of August 2026. Opening days and hours vary by shop, so please check official social media.
