All NYC Buses to Get Stroller-Friendly Spaces by End of 2026 in Major MTA Upgrade

For anyone who has wrestled with a stroller, a baby and a diaper bag on a moving bus, the announcement comes as a welcome relief. The MTA is expanding a programme that lets parents keep one stroller open during the ride, removing one of the biggest headaches of city travel with small children.

The agency revealed this week that the open-stroller initiative will roll out to its entire fleet of more than 5,800 buses. A designated space near the rear door will accommodate one unfolded stroller, while remaining completely separate from the priority areas at the front reserved for wheelchair users and passengers with mobility devices.

Roughly three-quarters of buses have already been retrofitted, according to NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow. Depending on the model, the setup will be either an open bay or a pair of seats that flip upward to create room.

"We're making our bus network a better option for parents and families to get where they need to go," Crichlow said at Thursday's announcement.

The programme traces back to a 2022 pilot involving 142 buses on seven routes. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: more than 80 percent of surveyed riders backed the idea, and bus operators logged zero safety incidents or conflicts. By 2023 it had grown to over 1,000 buses across 57 routes, and the following year the MTA pledged to buy only new buses with stroller spaces built in from the factory.

A few rules remain. Only one open stroller is permitted per bus - if the spot is taken or your stroller is too large, you will need to fold it. Children must stay secured, brakes must be engaged, and strollers must be controlled at all times. Boarding still happens through the front door. Look for the stroller-symbol sticker near the entrance to identify which buses are stroller-ready.

For New York parents used to treating a simple bus journey as a logistical puzzle, that little sticker will be a very welcome sight indeed.
