Just 2 Hours from Barcelona: Setcases, the Pyrenees Village with a River Beach & Mountain Trails to Escape the Summer Heat

A mountain paradise near Barcelona with hiking trails, a river beach and fresh air for summer — in the Ripollès region of Girona.

Just two hours from Barcelona, tucked between green valleys and towering mountains, lies a small but impressive mountain destination ideal for those looking to escape the heat and summer crowds without giving up refreshing swims or the authentic high-mountain experience.

We're talking about Setcases — a charming medieval spot surrounded by nature, sitting at over 1,200 metres in the Ripollès region of Girona. Faithful to its rural past, it's an ideal summer getaway where nighttime temperatures can drop to 12°C.

Setcases: The Mountain Village with a Beach

Its stone streets, wooden balconies, forests and rivers create an authentic Pyrenean postcard scene — with one unexpected twist: a beach right in the heart of a Pyrenean village.

Just a few minutes' walk from the centre, the town hall has set up the "platgeta" — a small river beach on the crystal-clear course of the River Ter. When the sun beats down, this spot becomes a natural oasis: loungers, parasols and river sand to lie on or rest after a hike, always while respecting the environment.

The water, flowing directly from the snowmelt, never exceeds 15°C in summer — guaranteeing the refreshing dip you need.

Medieval heritage also lives on in the Church of Sant Miquel, with its Baroque altarpiece — one of the few that survived the Civil War. Throughout the year, Setcases hosts traditional events like the Mushroom Festival (Fiesta del Bolet), where you can sample the local produce from its forests.

Hiking Trails from Setcases

Setcases is the starting point for numerous trails through the Ter and Freser Headwaters Natural Park, suitable for all levels. The main route is the trek to the source of the Ter River — walking from the village to where the river is born, through high-mountain landscapes and alpine meadows.

Alternatively, the circular route through Coll de la Marrana and Les Borregues follows mountain paths that let you reach summits and enjoy panoramic views across the eastern Pyrenees. Then there's the GR11 — the legendary Pyrenean trail that passes through Setcases, crossing the entire Pyrenees from east to west.
