The Millen Penang Hotel Review: A Luxurious Stay on Millionaire's Row

When in Penang, most people spend their time eating at street food stalls and exploring cultural gems. But on my last visit, I decided to do something different: stay in.

Gen Z calls this 'room-rotting' — where enjoying your accommodation and all its amenities becomes an experience in itself. Rather than packing a trip with activities to tick off a list, I opted for an anti-itinerary micro-cation.

I chose The Millen Penang, a five-star establishment. Spending three days here proved effortless — I rarely felt the need to leave.

Turning into The Millen Penang is an experience in itself. Few addresses in Penang carry the weight of history like Northam Road. This elegant waterfront boulevard became known as Millionaire's Row during the British colonial era, when Penang stood as one of Southeast Asia's most prosperous trading ports.

Welcoming guests is 'The Water Garden', a striking fountain art piece by Malaysian sculptural artist Pamela Tan. Drawing inspiration from British tea culture, the fountain evokes a water garden in the city with its blooming flower motifs and water ripples.

Stepping inside feels like entering a contemporary gallery. The interiors blend the glamour of Art Deco with twentieth-century modernism — from geometric floor patterns, mirrored wall panels and bronze details to an array of curated artworks.

I stayed in the Straits Loft, spanning 82 square metres. The expansive layout separates living and rest areas: an elegant lounge with a 55-inch Smart IPTV and minibar, and beyond another door, the bedroom with soaring double-height ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows framing uninterrupted views of the Straits of Malacca. The plush King-size bed was easily one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever come across.

Dining was equally impressive. Lili, the signature restaurant, reimagines Malaysian cuisine with a contemporary touch. Good Society is the hotel's social heart — a stylish café by day, a sophisticated cocktail bar by night. On the ninth floor, Blacklinen is a Michelin-selected contemporary grill house serving only 24 diners at a time.

The infinity swimming pool on Level 9 features a glass-walled design that creates the feeling of floating above the horizon with sweeping views towards the Andaman Sea — the hotel's most photogenic spot, especially during the golden hours of the afternoon.
