On Friday, July 31, New York's most legendary greenmarket marks its golden anniversary with a free community celebration. From 4pm to 8pm, Union Square transforms into an evening festival featuring live jazz performances, food from cherished local eateries, a beer garden, and of course, birthday cake.

The festivities honor five decades since the market's 1976 debut, when a handful of regional growers started selling directly to city residents. What launched as a modest community operation has evolved into one of NYC's essential culinary hotspots, drawing everyone from weekly regulars and home cooks to nationally renowned chefs.

Friday's lineup includes live music from Jazz Foundation musicians alongside food and drinks available for purchase from neighborhood favorites such as Long Count, Osteria 57, Cmartys Jerk, Brooklyn Curry Project, Lighthouse BK, Breads Bakery, and Abigail's Kitchen. A brief anniversary program is scheduled, with the cake-cutting ceremony set for 6pm. Entry is free; food and drinks are pay-as-you-go. The event is family-friendly with activities planned for visitors of all ages.
