Tucked among the crags of the Pyrenees at nearly 3,000 metres, this glacial lake is the highest in Catalonia. It sits inside Parc Natural del Alto Pirineo — the region's largest protected area — and offers stunning up-close views of Pica d'Estats (3,143 m), Catalonia's highest peak. With virtually no tourist traffic, it's one of the best-guarded secrets among mountaineers and hikers — though the routes are challenging and not suitable for beginners.

How to Get There & Camping Rules

Wild camping is permitted beside the lake, but the rules are strict: you may stay only one night, and tents or bivouacs are allowed only between 20:00 and 08:00. Groups are capped at three small tents; larger parties must apply for a special permit.

The altitude and near-pristine environment mean zero light pollution and unbeatable stargazing. But reaching the lake is no picnic: park at the Molinassa car park (approx. 1,800 m), then hike the rest of the way. The route is extremely demanding — it can take 9–10 hours for inexperienced hikers, so pack light and prepare well.

A Smuggler and Fugitive Trail

The area has no plaques or official records, but its proximity to the French border made it a key route for smugglers and refugees — especially during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Who knows, you might stumble upon a relic lost decades or even centuries ago.
