Product Details

The Sun and Moon Pagodas are two pagodas located in Shanhu Lake in the centre of Guilin. The Sun Pagoda is a bronze pagoda, while the Moon Pagoda is a glazed pagoda. The two pagodas are connected by a tunnel over 10 metres long beneath the lake. At night, under the illumination of lights, the two pagodas emit golden and silver glows respectively, creating a particularly beautiful reflection on the lake. The Sun Pagoda stands 41 metres tall with nine storeys, and is entirely decorated with pure bronze, radiating resplendent splendour. All components of the bronze pagoda, such as the body, roof tiles, upturned eaves, pillars, beams, and floors, are fully adorned with bronze murals. An elevator is available inside the pagoda for visitors to ride. On the first floor of the Sun Pagoda, there is a bronze bell for blessings, where visitors can ring the bell to pray for good fortune. Meanwhile, tea houses are located on the first and second floors, where visitors can enjoy tea and admire the scenery.

The Moon Pagoda stands 35 metres tall with seven storeys, and is a glazed pagoda connected to the Sun Pagoda via an underwater tunnel over 10 metres long. The carved and painted doors and windows on each floor of the Moon Pagoda feature different themes, rich in traditional Chinese charm. Its underground palace houses a large mural of Ming Dynasty blue‑and‑white plum vases from Guilin, while on the ground floor facing the lake, there is a "Tai Chi Drum" where visitors can beat the drum to showcase their vigour. The surroundings, interior walls, doors, and windows of the twin pagodas are adorned with colourful patterns, primarily in yellow, green, white, blue, and black. These murals mainly reflect the culture of northern Guangxi, featuring various floral and plant motifs as well as the "Yao King Seal", embodying the cultural traits of ethnic minorities in pursuing a refined life. If you do not wish to spend money to ascend the pagodas and simply want to view or photograph this Guilin landmark, you can do so along the shores of Shanhu Lake. The ideal time for viewing is at night, when the lights of the twin pagodas are illuminated—one shines with golden light, and the other with silvery white light.
