Travelers visiting Vancouver between spring and autumn can view a compelling new public art installation presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery in partnership with the Capture Photography Festival. Artist Cannupa Hanska Luger's billboard work, titled Future Ancestral Technologies: WE SURVIVE YOU, is on display from March 28 to September 27, 2026.

Indigenous Science Fiction in Public Space
Luger's featured artwork depicts warrior- or sentry-like figures dressed in vibrant, patterned regalia, drawing from his broader Future Ancestral Technologies series. This ongoing project functions as a form of Indigenous science fiction, reflecting on culture, human survival, and ecological changes in the present century. The public display invites viewers to imagine new futures while emphasizing the importance of Indigenous knowledge.

Site-Specific Location and Related Main Exhibition

The outdoor installation is situated on a billboard at 1607 East Hastings Street near Woodland Drive, directly adjacent to the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. Located along East Hastings Street—a bustling commercial thoroughfare shaped by diverse social and industrial histories—the artwork stands on the unceded, ancestral lands of the xʷməθkʷəỹəm (Musqueam), S̱ḵw̱x̱ú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɂ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.
This public billboard installation is presented as part of the Vancouver Art Gallery's broader exhibition, Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change, which runs at the main gallery location from May 14, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
