With more than 180 shops, stores, and restaurants, it's one of the largest markets in western Japan—and it's become such a favorite among foreign visitors that you'll often find more international travelers here than Japanese locals.

What Is Kuromon Market?

Kuromon Market's history stretches back to the mid-Edo period. It was originally called "Enmyoji Market" after the nearby Buddhist temple Enmyoji (圓明寺), where fishermen and merchants would gather to sell their goods.

The temple had a large black gate, which is how the market earned its name—"Kuromon" literally means "black gate." Although Enmyoji was destroyed by a huge fire in 1912 and no longer stands, the market's name has stuck.

The market was also half-destroyed during World War II but was rebuilt by the local community. Originally made up of shops selling fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, and sweets, it began welcoming more restaurants, izakaya, and cafés in the early 2010s—a shift that boosted its popularity among foreign visitors.
