Did you know Kyoto is home to over 4,000 temples and shrines—more than the number of convenience stores in the city? With so many to choose from, picking which ones to visit can feel overwhelming.

To help first-time visitors, we've compiled a list of 10 must-visit shrines and temples that should be at the top of your itinerary.

1. Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion)

Kinkakuji (金閣寺), officially named Rokuonji, is one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. This shimmering Zen temple in northern Kyoto draws millions of visitors each year with its gold-leaf-covered exterior reflected in the surrounding pond. Originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was later converted into a temple.

2. Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine

Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社), founded in 711, is the head shrine of all Inari shrines in Japan, dedicated to the deity of rice, prosperity, and business. It's famous for its thousands of vivid red torii gates winding up the forested slopes of Mount Inari—made globally iconic by the film "Memoirs of a Geisha." Beyond the main photo spots, a hidden hiking trail leads to quieter groves of bamboo and cedar.

3. Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu Temple (清水寺), or Kiyomizudera, is one of Kyoto's oldest temples, founded in 778. Its massive wooden stage, built without a single nail, juts out over the hillside for sweeping city views. The name "Kiyomizu" means "pure water," referring to the sacred Otowa Waterfall on the grounds.

4. Sanjusangendo Temple

Sanjusangendo (三十三間堂) houses one of Japan's most awe-inspiring sights: a hall filled with 1,001 life-sized statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Built in the 13th century, the temple's name means "Hall of Thirty-Three Spaces," a masterpiece of Kamakura-period craftsmanship.

5. Ginkakuji Temple (Silver Pavilion)

Ginkakuji (銀閣寺), or the Silver Pavilion, was modeled after Kinkakuji but never actually clad in silver. Built in the late 15th century by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, it embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Its moss garden and raked sand garden are masterpieces of Zen landscaping, especially stunning in autumn.

6. Ryoanji Temple

Ryoanji (龍安寺) is best known for its rock garden, one of the most iconic examples of karesansui (dry landscape) design. Created in the late 15th century, the garden's 15 stones are arranged so that no matter where you stand, you can never see all of them at once—inviting meditation and quiet reflection.

7. Kifune Shrine

Kifune Shrine (貴船神社), tucked in the forested mountains north of Kyoto, is beloved by photographers for its lantern-lined stone steps, especially stunning in snow or autumn foliage. Dedicated to the god of water and matchmaking, it's a favorite spot for those praying for strong relationships.

8. Heian Shrine

Heian Shrine (平安神宮) was built in 1895 to honor the first and last emperors to rule from Kyoto. Its vivid red buildings and one of Japan's largest torii gates lead to a complex modeled after the ancient Imperial Palace. In spring, its weeping cherry trees burst into bloom, turning the gardens pink.

9. Tenryuji Temple

Tenryuji (天龍寺), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most prominent temple in Arashiyama. Built in 1339 by shogun Ashikaga Takauji, it's renowned for its beautifully landscaped garden, largely unchanged since the 14th century, and its famous cloud dragon ceiling painting.

10. Byodoin Temple

Byodoin (平等院), located in nearby Uji, is one of Japan's most iconic Buddhist temples—its Phoenix Hall appears on the back of the 10-yen coin. Built in 1052 during the Heian Period, the hall's reflection on the pond creates a perfectly symmetrical view that draws photographers and pilgrims alike.

Planning your first trip to Kyoto? These 10 sites should be at the top of your list!
