That's the first thing worth knowing. The second is that Catalonia's most famous thermal town has no train connection, something that applies to almost none of the prettiest towns near Barcelona.

Where are the thermal springs near Barcelona? In Caldes de Montbui, La Garriga, Arenys de Mar and Caldes de Malavella, the four closest thermal towns. The El Safareig municipal bath costs 7 euros, while hotel circuits run to around 34. Caldes's water emerges at 74 degrees — the hottest on the Iberian peninsula.

The 7-euro thermal bath almost nobody has on their radar

Banys Termals El Safareig is a municipal facility in Caldes de Montbui, not a hotel. General entry costs 7 euros, with a reduced rate of 4.50 for under-16s, students, pensioners, the unemployed and youth-card holders.

It opens Wednesday to Sunday in three slots: 10:00–15:00, 16:00–18:00 and 19:00–22:00. Book via safareigtermal.cat or call 618 796 725, Wednesday to Sunday and holidays, 10:30–14:00 and 16:30–21:00.

It's the answer for anyone who wants real thermal water without the spa format, and the night slot turns it into an after-dinner plan that none of Barcelona's spas and thermal centres can offer.

Caldes de Montbui has no train — and that changes the plan

This is the detail that throws many people when planning their day. No Rodalies train reaches Caldes de Montbui. You go by bus, on Sagalés line e9, which leaves Barcelona every 20 to 30 minutes and takes around 45.

It's the exception among the nearby thermal towns. La Garriga is reached on Rodalies line R3 (running from L'Hospitalet to Vic), and Arenys de Mar on the coastal R1. Caldes de Malavella, already in the province of Girona, is reached on the Girona line.

Both lines continue beyond the thermal town, so the same ticket goes further: the R3 continues to Vic and the Girona line ends in Girona city.

74-degree water and what you can see for free

The Font del Lleó in Caldes de Montbui gushes water at 74 degrees, the highest temperature on the entire Iberian peninsula. The spas cool it down progressively before use.

The fountain sits in the square and can be seen for free, as can the Roman Baths (Termes Romanes) and the El Safareig de La Portalera. The Thermalia museum, which also serves as the tourist office, is at plaça de la Font del Lleó 20, tel. 938 654 140.

A morning in town seeing the fountain and the Roman baths, plus a 7-euro entry to the municipal bath in the afternoon, makes a full day for less than the cost of a hotel circuit.

Hotel circuits: what they really cost

You don't need to stay overnight to get in. The two day-circuit spas most accessible from Barcelona charge almost the same.

Blancafort Spa Termal, in La Garriga, has a 120-minute thermal circuit for 34.83 euros. Tel. 93 860 56 00. It admits children aged 4 to 13 in the Natatorium accompanied by an adult, in the Blancafort Kids slot of 10:00–16:00, which is unusual in the sector.

Broquetas, in Caldes de Montbui, offers a 90-minute circuit with a drink for 34 euros.

Termes Victòria, also in Caldes de Montbui, publishes no price on its website and you have to call 93 865 01 50. It has two distinct spaces, the Espai CEL and the classic spa. Reaching any of the three without a car costs the price of a single ticket.

If the plan is to stay in the city, the urban options use treated water rather than their own spring.

When to go: October to March
