It may still be August and your air conditioner may be working overtime, but consider this your cue to start thinking about sweaters and cider doughnuts: NYC's fall foliage season is officially on the horizon.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has just released its 2026 fall foliage map and forecast, which tracks the progression of autumn color across the country using historical patterns. According to the map, New York City should reach — or come close to — peak fall color by November 1.

That makes the city one of the later leaf-peeping destinations in New York State. The annual show kicks off far up north in the Adirondacks in late September before gradually rolling south through October. The Almanac says color can linger into early November in New York City and on Long Island, while the Adirondacks, Catskills and Hudson Valley rank among the state's most popular spots for seeing the leaves.

There is, of course, a sizable nature-shaped asterisk on that date. The Almanac notes its forecast rests on historical foliage patterns, and actual peak color can shift by several days depending on temperature, rainfall and early frosts. Most destinations should peak near their historical averages this year — but Mother Nature is famously bad at honoring Google Calendar invites.

Weather shapes more than timing, too. Sunny days, cool nights and adequate rainfall tend to yield the brightest colors, while drought, heavy rain, strong winds or an early frost can shorten the show or mute its intensity. Peak color generally lasts only about a week in any given place.

So while November 1 is the date to watch for now, check local foliage reports as the date nears. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of summer — and maybe start clearing space in your camera roll.
