Barcelona is a cultural heavyweight — but museum-hopping doesn't have to break the bank. Many of the city's top institutions offer free entry on the first Sunday of every month, or every Sunday afternoon from 3pm. Here's the local editors' pick of 10 Barcelona museums you can visit for free.

1. Catalan National Museum of Art (MNAC)
Housed in Montjuïc's grand Palau Nacional, with collections spanning Romanesque to mid-20th-century Catalan art. Free every Saturday from 3pm and on the first Sunday of each month. Also free on September 11 (Catalan National Day) and May 18 (International Museum Day).
2. Portal de Santa Madrona
Climb Barcelona's 14th-century city wall at the Maritime Museum. Free on the first and third Sunday of each month, 11am–2pm.
3. Centre d'Exposicions Martorell
Part of the Natural Sciences Museum, exploring the history of science. Free on the first Sunday (all day) and every Sunday from 3pm. Also free on February 12, May 18 and September 24 (La Mercè).
4. Monestir de Pedralbes
A stunning 14th-century Gothic convent built by Queen Elisenda. Free on the first Sunday of each month and every Sunday after 3pm.

5. Picasso Museum

A hidden gem inside the old Royal Palace, showcasing sculptor Frederic Marès' eclectic collection. Free on the first Sunday (11am–8pm) and every Sunday from 3pm.
