New York Ranks Among the World's Top 20 Gen Z Cities — Here's Where It Landed

Living in New York as a young person has never been cheap. Your apartment might be the size of a closet, you're likely splitting rent with several flatmates, and somehow a basic cocktail runs $17. Yet Gen Z continues to find the city irresistible.
Time Out, in partnership with Intrepid Travel, just dropped its 2026 ranking of the world's best cities for Gen Z — and New York landed at No. 6. The list draws from responses by under-30s in Time Out's annual global city survey, featuring only the highest-rated city from each country.
What's keeping young New Yorkers hooked? An overwhelming 98% described the city as walkable, while 88% called it lively. The culture scene earned a 95% approval rating, placing NYC third globally for culture. And while nobody's calling this place affordable, 93% said accessing art here doesn't break the bank.
It makes sense. With free museum evenings, gallery launches, alfresco film screenings, park concerts and roughly 4,000 happenings on any given Tuesday, New York still delivers — even the day after your rent clears.
The city fell just short of the top five. Tokyo grabbed the crown, powered by remarkably upbeat figures: every single Gen Z respondent there finds joy in daily life, and 89% praised the nightlife. Porto came second, then Melbourne, Edinburgh and Shanghai. NYC edged out Copenhagen, while Berlin, Valencia and Bangkok filled out the top ten.
Affordability scores weren't pretty, but a sixth-place finish suggests young people will put up with a lot for a New York address. Tiny flat? Fine. Dubious rent-to-paycheck ratio? Manageable. World-class art, food and nightlife right outside your front door? That part is priceless.
