Hokkaido (Japanese: 北海道／ほっかいどう〔ほくかいだう〕) is the northernmost first-level administrative division of Japan, and is currently the only administrative division in Japan named with "Dō" (circuit). Its capital is Sapporo. As Hokkaido was developed only in modern times, its population density is much lower than other regions of Japan. This allows Hokkaido to retain vast natural environments untouched by human interference, attracting numerous tourists. Hokkaido is a popular tourist destination in Japan, and its vast area gives different regions distinctly different tourism resources. Southern Hokkaido (Dōnan) is the earliest area reached by the Japanese in Hokkaido, thus it is known for its historical and cultural landscapes. Matsumae Castle is the northernmost Japanese-style castle in Japan and the only one in Hokkaido. Esashi Town on the west coast of the Oshima Peninsula is famous for its folk culture and historical landscapes. Hakodate City is the tourism centre of the Dōnan region. As one of Japan's first five open ports, Hakodate is renowned for its Western-style architecture, with representative examples including the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse and the former Hakodate Ward Public Hall. The night view from Mount Hakodate is acclaimed as one of the three greatest night views in the world.
