Shantou

Shantou is the core city of Teochew culture, known as the 'Hometown of Teochew Cuisine in China', with a strong overseas Chinese heritage as declared by the Shantou Municipal People's Government. Must-visit attractions include the Xiao Park Historical and Cultural District, featuring charming retro arcade buildings in Nanyang style; Nan'ao Island, the only island county in Guangdong, with the stunning beach at Qing'ao Bay and the Changshanwei Lighthouse as a popular Instagram check-in spot; and Queshi Scenic Area offering a panoramic view of the city. The culinary scene is the biggest highlight of Shantou: Teochew beef hotpot with fresh beef paired with satay sauce offers an exquisite taste; hand-beaten beef balls are bouncy and bursting with juice; braised lion-head goose is rich but not greasy; and a variety of snacks such as oyster omelette, rice cakes, Teochew rice rolls, and preserved fruit with licorice provide unique and diverse flavours.
