Visitors at Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Família witnessed a rare blend of Catalan folklore and sacred architecture on Saturday, 12 September. The regional casteller group Nens del Vendrell celebrated its 100th anniversary by building a 4 de 8 human tower inside the famous basilica during an international evening Mass.

Centenary Celebration Inside Gaudí's Masterpiece

Founded in 1926, the Nens del Vendrell troupe reached its centenary milestone in a year that also marks 100 years since the death of Antoni Gaudí, the visionary architect behind the Sagrada Família. The spectacular performance brought traditional Catalan popular culture into the heart of the landmark sanctuary.

The unique event combined cultural tradition with spiritual elements:

  • Members of the group constructed the impressive human tower directly within the basilica walls.

  • Younger group members presented a traditional casteller neckerchief during the Mass offertory as a gesture of gratitude.

  • The occasion drew civic dignitaries and community leaders, including the Mayor of El Vendrell, representatives from surrounding municipalities, and members of the Sagrada Família Foundation Board.

Why Visit the Sagrada Família

For travellers heading to Barcelona, the Sagrada Família remains an unmissable highlight of Catalan heritage. While iconic for its unique architecture and ongoing construction, special international evening Masses and cultural displays offer visitors extraordinary opportunities to experience authentic local traditions and folk customs within one of the world's most famous spiritual sites.
