Kaohsiung is undergoing a massive urban transformation. Driven by high-profile infrastructural upgrades and commercial developments across key zones—including the Asia New Bay Area, North Kaohsiung Reorganisation Zone, and the Kaohsiung Main Station Special District—the harbour city's retail landscape is expanding at an unprecedented rate.

From Mitsui's highly anticipated LaLaport Fengshan to Taiwan's largest Costco flagship store, as well as high-profile mixed-use developments like Hanshin Department Store Building 3 and the Global Mall at Kaohsiung Station, the city is cementing its status as South Taiwan's premier shopping haven. Here is your ultimate guide to 8 new mega shopping complexes and retail landmarks shaping the future of Kaohsiung.ScreenShot_2026-09-17_112342_054_webp.webp

1. Hanshin Department Store Building 3 (凹子底 Area)

Hanshin Department Store has confirmed the establishment of its brand-new mega shopping mall—Hanshin Department Store Building 3—within Fubon Financial's landmark "Star of Kaohsiung" (富邦凹子底) development project. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the complex boasts a total retail floor space of approximately 45,000 ping (around 148,700 square metres).

Upon completion, it will become the third-largest shopping complex in Kaohsiung, surpassing both the original Hanshin Department Store Main Building and Hanshin Arena Shopping Plaza. The development will directly connect to Kaohsiung MRT Aozihdi Station and Kaohsiung Light Rail Heart of Love River Station, integrating dining, entertainment, luxury shopping, and transit connectivity in North Kaohsiung.

* Address: Intersection of Bo'ai 2nd Road and Dashun 1st Road, Gushan District, Kaohsiung City

2. Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Fengshan

Developed by Japan's Mitsui Fudosan Group, LaLaport Fengshan is scheduled to open its doors by the end of this year. It will mark the second-largest shopping centre in Kaohsiung and stands as the largest Mitsui LaLaport destination in Taiwan.

Located in the heart of Fengshan District, the complex spans seven storeys above ground and two underground levels. It is set to house around 270 retail units, featuring a vast range of Japanese lifestyle brands, thematic restaurants, and popular culinary outlets under the Hi-Lai Foods Group. Positioned adjacent to KMRT Fengshan West Station and the Weiwuying National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts, LaLaport Fengshan is poised to become a vital cultural and commercial hub in South Taiwan.

* Address: Intersection of Ziyou Road and Yihui Road, Fengshan District, Kaohsiung City

3. Hon Hai Twin Towers (Y15 Development)

The Asia New Bay Area is welcoming another flagship architectural icon. Located right beside the Kaohsiung Port Travel Centre, the Hon Hai Twin Towers (Hon Hai Asia New Bay Area Flagship Headquarters) will serve as Kaohsiung's fourth-tallest skyscraper upon completion.

Integrated directly with the land development project of KMRT Yellow Line Y15 Station, the development will combine corporate office space, high-end dining, and retail options seamlessly linked to the waterfront travel centre. Expected to finish construction in 2033, the project will serve as a core commercial engine driving economic growth and connectivity across the Asia New Bay Area.

4. Global Mall Kaohsiung Station

Kaohsiung Main Station is receiving a major retail upgrade with the arrival of Global Mall. Operating under the official railway commercial space lease project managed by Taiwan Railway Corporation, Global Mall secured the operational rights for the station's commercial complex.

Situated directly above the underground railway station, the 10-storey commercial building features a total shopping area of roughly 16,000 ping (around 52,800 square metres). The mall plans to accommodate between 150 and 160 brands, maintaining a retail-to-dining ratio of approximately 6:4. Set to open by the end of 2027, it will mark the largest Global Mall station shopping centre in Taiwan.

5. Kaohsiung Port Travel Centre Commercial Space

Serving as the primary passenger maritime gateway for Taiwan's largest port, the Kaohsiung Port Travel Centre along Haobian Road features a striking architectural design inspired by fluid oceanic waves—resembling a giant whale moored along the bay.

The 15-storey complex (with 2 basement levels) is built to accommodate cruise ships up to 250,000 gross tonnage. Beyond its transit functions, the internal space is designed as a lifestyle destination containing boutique retail shops, a 360-degree panoramic sky cafe, corporate offices, and waterfront leisure facilities.

Costco Taiwan's brand-new Kaohsiung flagship store is set to open on 3 July, creating a major retail milestone in the Asia New Bay Area. Covering an expanse of 14,000 ping (around 46,200 square metres), the new location is roughly double the size of the original Kaohsiung branch, making it the largest Costco store in Taiwan.

Situated in the 80th Urban Redevelopment Zone in Qianzhen District, the sea-view flagship store is conveniently located near Kaohsiung Light Rail Software Park Station and Commerce and Trade Park Station, featuring expanded warehouse shopping areas and extensive parking facilities.

Spanning a total gross floor area of over 30,000 ping (around 99,000 square metres), Q Square Kaohsiung is strategically positioned to connect with the nearby TSMC facility and surrounding semiconductor industrial clusters. Slated for opening in 2030 at the earliest, it aims to become a primary retail destination in North Kaohsiung.

Situated along Chenggong 2nd Road in the Asia New Bay Area, Southeast Miller PLAZA is an open-concept retail park project spearheaded by Southeast Cement Corporation. Spanning approximately 4,000 ping (around 13,200 square metres), the development emphasizes low-density architecture, natural greenery, and spatial openness.

The layout adopts a village-style cluster design featuring 12 standalone two-storey buildings housing 24 brand stores, with individual store sizes ranging from 150 to 170 ping (around 495 to 560 square metres). Slated for full completion and opening in 2027, the complex will offer an airy, open-air lifestyle environment for dining and shopping.

Practical Tips for Travellers

* Transportation & Mass Transit: Most new retail developments in Kaohsiung are directly integrated with transit infrastructure. For travelling around the Asia New Bay Area or downtown districts, utilizing the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (KMRT) lines and the Kaohsiung Light Rail network is recommended.

* Tax-Free Shopping: Major department stores and shopping complexes in Taiwan offer VAT refund services for foreign visitors holding valid passport documentation when spending above the required minimum threshold on the same day.

* Opening Timelines: While venues like Costco Kaohsiung and LaLaport Fengshan are opening soon, several large-scale developments (such as Hanshin Building 3, Global Mall Kaohsiung Station, Southeast Miller PLAZA, and Q Square) are scheduled for completion between 2027 and 2030. Always verify opening hours and travel dates prior to planning your itinerary.
