Challenging Eurocentric Art Histories

Born in Shiraz, Iran, and based in Brooklyn, artist Kamrooz Aram uses his Arabesque series to expand the traditional scrolling vegetal motifs—known in Arabic as islimi—into abstract compositions of color and form. By pairing his contemporary paintings with historical Islamic ceramics, Aram challenges Eurocentric hierarchies that historically dismissed such patterns as decorative rather than fine art.

In a unique partnership with Aga Khan Museum Curator Dr. Michael Chagnon, Aram co-curates this gallery space by displaying one of his modern Arabesque paintings beside a celebrated 13th-century Iranian ceramic fritware piece from the museum's collection. The pairing explores shared design aesthetics across centuries while questioning traditional artistic boundaries.
