London Underground to launch new air-conditioned Piccadilly Line trains from late 2026
Travel across London is set for a major upgrade as Transport for London prepares to launch a new fleet of 94 state-of-the-art trains on the Piccadilly Line. Aiming to start carrying passengers between December 2026 and June 2027, the modernised fleet will introduce air conditioning to a deep Tube line for the very first time—a feature sure to be welcomed by travellers following recent record-breaking summer heatwaves.

Upgraded features and improved frequencies
Visitors and locals using the Piccadilly Line, which handles 10% of all London Underground journeys, can expect a significantly improved ride experience. Key upgrades on the new trains include:

Air conditioning throughout the carriages
Walk-through carriages allowing easier movement
Wide double doors across all carriages
Enhanced digital displays and on-train CCTV cameras
Improved step-free access for passengers
The upgrades will also boost service frequency during peak times, rising from 24 trains an hour to 27, cutting wait times between services to just 135 seconds.
Important notice on travel disruptions
Passengers should be aware that summer and September service disruptions along the line are part of essential preparation works for these new arrivals. Additional closures and disruptions are scheduled ahead of the fleet rollout, so travelers are advised to check transport updates and plan their journeys accordingly.
