Gyeonggi Northern Rail Line Reopens After 21 Years: Goyang-Yangju-Uijeongbu in 50 Minutes, GTX-A Transfer at Daegok

A suburban rail line connecting the Gyeonggi-do cities of Goyang, Yangju and Uijeongbu has resumed operations after a 21-year suspension, giving commuters and travelers in the northern part of the Seoul metropolitan area a fresh transport option.

The line first opened in 1961 and was once the main mode of transport in northern Gyeonggi-do. It was discontinued in April 2004 after ridership declined with the opening of the Seoul Outer Circular Expressway and the expansion of the Seoul metro system. The suspension caused growing inconvenience for residents, prompting Gyeonggi-do Province to team up with the transport ministry, the cities of Uijeongbu, Yangju and Goyang, Korea Railroad Corp. (Korail) and Korea National Railway in 2021 to bring the line back.

Six Stations and Service Details

Covering 30.5 km, the line has six stations - Daegok, Wonneung, Iryeong, Jangheung, Songchu and Uijeongbu - with three Mugunghwa trains offering eight roundtrips a day.

The first train from Uijeongbu departs at 6 a.m. and the last at 7:29 p.m.; the trip between Uijeongbu and Daegok takes about 50 minutes. Passengers can transfer to the Great Train eXpress Line A (GTX-A) at Daegok for faster access to central Seoul.

Fares and Ticketing

The basic fare is KRW 2,600. Service starts with eight roundtrips daily, with frequency to be gradually increased. Reservations can be made via the Korail Talk app and the Let's KoRail website; automatic ticket machines are available at Uijeongbu, Iryeong and Daegok, while tickets can be bought onboard at the unmanned stations of Songchu, Jangheung and Wonneung.
