A massive 30-km linear park is coming to the GTA — here's what to know about the Durham Meadoway
A sprawling new linear park and active transportation corridor is taking shape in Durham Region, backed by more than $3.3 million in fresh federal funding for new and upgraded trails, pathways and amenities.
The funding, announced last week, will advance several regional projects — including work on the 30-kilometre Durham Meadoway, a transportation corridor and linear park that will eventually link neighbourhoods from the Toronto-Pickering boundary to Harmony Road in Oshawa.
Once complete, the corridor is envisioned as a 'significant east-to-west recreational facility and active transportation spine,' with ecological enhancements, community amenities and public art added along the way.
The money will fund the park's preliminary design study and traffic signal upgrades at several intersections to improve safety along the route — part of a wider slate of projects also receiving support.
In Ajax, the Crestpoint Lands (formerly the Annandale lands) will gain roughly 1.5 kilometres of new multi-use path as part of the Trans Canada Trail project.
In Oshawa, a one-kilometre multi-use path is planned along Townline Road North between Beatrice Street East and Taunton Road East. While Ottawa is investing just over $3.3 million across the three projects through the Active Transportation Fund (ATF), Durham, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa are jointly contributing $1.2 million to the Durham Meadoway.
Ajax is also adding $810,000 to the Annandale project, while Oshawa is contributing $210,000 toward its pedestrian pathway.
'These investments will help create stronger connections between our communities and provide residents with more opportunities to walk, cycle and enjoy the outdoors,' said Jennifer McKelvie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.
'By improving trails, multi-use pathways and recreational amenities, we are supporting active transportation while creating more accessible and welcoming spaces for residents to enjoy for years to come.'
The Durham Meadoway doesn't yet have an anticipated completion date, but its preliminary design phase is expected to run through Spring 2028.
