Bangkok Claims No. 2 Spot on Time Out's 2026 Best Cities for Food

Food and drink culture is at the heart of every great city — it nourishes people daily, reflects a city's identity, sparks conversation and is a key reason many travellers book their tickets. So when Time Out reveals its annual ranking of the world's best food cities, it's not just a list of restaurants, but a survey of how people eat, drink and live.

This year Bangkok once again holds the No. 2 spot among the world's best food cities — and for anyone who has lived here, that's hardly a surprise. Bangkok's charm lies in its ability to let you hop from a street-food stall costing a few dozen baht to a fine-dining feast within the same day. That diversity is what keeps the Thai capital vibrant and distinct from other leading food cities.

Meanwhile, global interest in Thai cuisine keeps growing, in ever deeper and more serious ways. Last year Sorn made history as the first Thai restaurant to win three Michelin stars, while a wave of young chefs are reinterpreting regional dishes from across the country, bringing once-local specialities onto the international stage.

Bangkok's bigger operators are equally keen to reinvent familiar dishes. ThongSmith, for one, elevated roadside boat noodles into a hugely successful casual-dining brand, while newer labels like Trog Maraga repackaged bitter-gourd chicken noodles with a more contemporary look — all while keeping the taste and easygoing charm of this everyday favourite fully intact.

The old neighbourhoods of Bangkok remain a powerful engine for the city's food scene, especially Song Wat Road, which keeps reinventing itself. Countless heritage shophouses have been renovated into distinctive new restaurants, bars and cafés, yet still sit harmoniously alongside the community's traditional shops, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere.

Talat Noi, meanwhile, remains a key destination for food lovers. No matter how many new restaurants open, people still queue outside Daeng Racha Hoy Tod for its legendary crispy oyster omelette — proof, perhaps, that some dishes are already perfect just as they are.
