Product Details

The Grand Palace of Thailand is located in the heart of Bangkok, adjacent to the Chao Phraya River. It is the most complete and largest palace complex in Thailand, known as the "Encyclopedia of Thai Art." Construction began in 1782 during the reign of King Rama I, modelled after the old royal palace in the former capital of Ayutthaya. Covering an area of approximately 218,400 square metres, it comprises 28 buildings surrounded by a white palace wall measuring 5 metres in height and 1,900 metres in length. The architecture blends the core Siamese style with green ceramic roof ridges, purplish‑red glazed tile roofs, and phoenix‑head eaves, gathering the essence of Thai painting, sculpture, and decorative arts.

Core Buildings and Functions

The main buildings are arranged along an east‑west axis, including four core structures: the Amarindra Hall, the Chakri Maha Prasat Hall, the Dusit Hall, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Chakri Maha Prasat Hall, built in 1882 to mark the centenary of the Bangkok dynasty, is a unique representation of a fusion between Thai‑style roofs and European architecture.

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, serving as the soul of the Grand Palace, houses the Emerald Buddha, a national treasure of Thailand. The surrounding galleries feature murals depicting the Ramakian epic, which hold significant artistic value.

This site once served as the residence of Kings Rama I to Rama VIII. After 1946, it ceased to function as a royal residence and is now used only for important ceremonies such as coronations and royal events.

History and Current Status

The Grand Palace has undergone repairs and expansions by successive kings, bearing witness to the rise and fall of the Bangkok dynasty. After officially opening to the public in 1946, it became Thailand's most iconic tourist landmark. Although it was temporarily closed due to the pandemic and other reasons, it reopened in November 2021. Symbols such as Nāga (mythical serpent guardian) and Garuda frequently appear in its architecture, originating from Indian culture and highlighting the fusion of royal authority and religious beliefs. It truly serves as a vibrant embodiment of Thai culture and history.
