For those unfamiliar, ukai is a centuries-old fishing method where usho (cormorant masters) work in remarkable harmony with specially trained birds called umiu.

A Unique Photo Spot and Candy Shopping

Start your day with a photo at the chatsubo-shaped mailbox just outside JR Uji Station — it's a traditional tea jar design, and yes, it's a real, working mailbox! The station is about 22 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line local train.

Then, pop into Kyoto Candy Factory Iwai Seika (JR Uji Station Branch) at 182-12 Uji Myoraku for some delightful shopping. With rows of sweets in every color and shape imaginable, it's impossible not to feel a spark of joy.

A Delightful Matcha Treat

Ujibashi Street buzzes with an eclectic mix of shops. Stop by Kyoto Uji Ochaman at 160-13 Uji Myoraku for their signature treat: a luxuriously rich matcha soft serve paired with original green tea dumplings. It's the perfect way to soak in the charm of Japan's tea capital.

More Treasures to Uncover

Take in the serene views of the Uji River, snap a photo with the beloved Murasaki Shikibu statue — a popular spot for visitors — and browse Byodoin-Omotesando street to find your perfect Uji tea. Near the ukai boarding area, the atmospheric Kisen Bridge exudes old-world charm.

Ukai on the Uji River

The tradition of ukai on the Uji River dates back to the Heian period (794 to late 12th century), appearing in classical diary literature of the era. Though the practice was interrupted at one point, it was revived in 1926 — exactly a century ago.

Today, umiu chicks are hatched through artificial incubation at Uji and raised with extraordinary care and affection. Every one of these treasured birds is lovingly nicknamed "Utty."

Watching ukai from a boat is pure delight. The usho's breathtaking skill and the profound bond they share with their birds is genuinely moving.
