What to Know Before Visiting Tokyo Beaches and Pools

Swimming is prohibited at urban beaches like Odaiba, but water sports are allowed with a permit.
During summer, some luxury hotels in the city open their pools to the public (for a fee).

Enjoy Water Activities at Bay Area Beaches

One of the closest beaches to the city center is Odaiba Seaside Park. While swimming is not permitted, you can enjoy a variety of water sports (a permit is required). The Odaiba waterfront is also famous for its breathtaking sunset views. Beyond Kasai Rinkai Park lies Kasai Marine Park, which offers seasonal seawater bathing experiences. Facilities include changing rooms and foot-washing stations, and the park offers "Nagisa BBQ" where you can enjoy barbecue hands-free (reservation required). Kasai Rinkai Park also houses the Kasai Rinkai Aquarium and a bird sanctuary.

Water Activities on Tokyo's Islands

Tokyo's outlying islands boast clean, beautiful beaches and open-air hot springs. Izu Oshima, the closest island to the city center, is about 2 hours away by ferry — its unique volcanic landscape will leave you breathless. Surfers should head to Niijima for its excellent waves. Shikinejima, with its emerald-green waters, is a popular diving destination.

Izu Oshima, Tokyo's largest island, features an active volcano at its center, and walking along its coastline reveals stunning geological formations. Surrounded by deep, clear waters, it is perfect for diving and snorkeling — dive in and you'll encounter colorful fish and marine plants.

Habushiura Beach on the eastern side of Niijima is a 6.5-kilometer stretch of white sand. Known internationally as a surfing mecca, it attracts professional surfers from around the globe. The island also offers windsurfing, fishing, and ocean swimming. Exploring the coastline, you'll find curious Moai statues made from local stone dotted along the beaches.

Shikinejima

With emerald-blue seas, white sandy beaches, and hiking trails framed by forest greenery, Shikinejima overflows with color. The rock-enclosed "pools" along the coast are actually hot springs — iron leached from the rocks gives the water a murky orange hue in some spots. The views from land are breathtaking, but the underwater scenery is equally spectacular. Shikinejima is also a highly popular diving destination.

MONSTER STREAM, which opened in 2024, lets you enjoy both waves and drifting at the same time. Yomiuriland

The massive leisure complex Yomiuriland is packed with attractions and events for visitors of all ages. Hotel Pools

An increasing number of luxury hotels in Tokyo now open their pools to non-staying guests. The pool at Hotel New Otani Tokyo is illuminated at night, and on select August dates, a Midnight Pool starting at 9:30 PM lets you spend a sophisticated summer evening with DJ music as your backdrop. Near Akasaka, Roppongi, and Tokyo Tower, ANA InterContinental Tokyo offers a garden pool where you can feel the resort atmosphere while remaining in the city center.
