Looking Back at History ‑ 200 Years of Glory
Madame Tussauds, which has never waned in popularity, has entertained over a million guests in its 200‑year history, with curiosity being one of the main reasons for its enduring appeal. Today, guests from renowned and powerful parts of the world demand unique and impactful experiences. The old museum‑style barriers have been removed, allowing guests to get up close with celebrities, sports stars, political figures and world leaders, and revisit moments from the past.

Museum Origins ‑ From France to Britain
This exhibition began its rich and exciting journey in 1770. A young Marie Tussaud learned the art of wax modelling from Dr. Philippe Curtius. At 17, she lived at the Palace of Versailles as the art teacher to Louis XVI's sister. During the French Revolution, she was forced to use her superb skills to create death masks. In the early 19th century, Marie Tussaud brought her collection to Britain.

Bringing Newsmakers to Life
Back when news relied on word of mouth, Marie Tussaud's exhibition was like a travel newspaper, bringing major events and figures to life in vivid detail. From the artistry of the French Revolution to the impact of the Napoleonic Wars on daily life in Europe, everything was directly relevant. Political figures, terrifying prison cells, and notorious villains all sparked the public's imagination. In 1835, Marie Tussaud moved her exhibition to Baker Street in London, establishing it as a permanent venue. Guests only had to pay sixpence to meet the famous figures. The main museum moved to Marylebone Road in 1884.
