⚠️Autumn Foliage Season Reminder: The timing of the autumn foliage colour change may vary slightly depending on the weather each year. Based on past experience, the best viewing period for Hoheikyo and Jozankei is approximately from early October to late October, from the gradual colour change of early autumn to the mountains ablaze in red — all worth looking forward to!

As Hokkaido enters its most breathtaking autumn foliage season of the year, the mountains and fields are tinted with layers of crimson and gold. This carefully selected one‑day foliage viewing route around Sapporo connects a gorge dam, an onsen valley, a blue volcanic lake and a dreamy European‑style garden — no long self‑driving needed, allowing you to enjoy a diverse range of autumn scenery in a single day.

The first stop is the Hoheikyo Dam, located in the upper reaches of Jozankei, surrounded by mountains embracing the gorge. In autumn, maple forests blanket the hillsides, and the calm lake surface resembles a mirror, perfectly reflecting the splendid colours of the mountains. Ride the eco‑friendly electric vehicle through the gorge, where the autumn leaves on both banks flow with your view, stepping into a natural autumn gallery where every frame is worth capturing.

Next, arrive at Jozankei Futami Park, step onto the iconic Futami Suspension Bridge, and gaze at the maple forests along the Toyohira River valley blazing like fire, with the stream carrying the light and shadows of the layered trees. The park features kappa statues of various designs, carrying ancient local legends and adding a touch of playfulness to the autumn scenery. The nearby Gensen Park offers a free foot bath — after a leisurely stroll admiring the autumn leaves, soak your feet in the hot spring to relieve fatigue and immerse yourself in the unique misty atmosphere of this hot spring town.

Continue to Lake Shikotsu, known as the lake with the clearest water in Japan. This unfrozen lake, formed by volcanic activity tens of thousands of years ago, has crystal‑clear azure water surrounded by maple trees. The deep blue lake surface and the vivid red autumn leaves complement each other, with the cool‑toned water contrasting against the warm red forest, outlining a dreamlike autumn landscape unique to Hokkaido.

The last stop of the tour is Yuni Garden, a large European‑style garden spanning 140,000 square metres. In autumn, the ginkgo avenue stretches on with golden hues, maple trees bloom like fire, and remaining flowers in the fields add accents throughout. Blending European horticultural aesthetics with Hokkaido's natural scenery, strolling through the garden immerses you in a richly picturesque autumn landscape.

The pace of the route is comfortable and the scenery is rich and diverse: majestic gorges, romantic river valleys, serene lakes and beautiful gardens. It is ideal for couples on a date, family outings or gatherings with friends. In one tour, collect the four classic autumn sceneries around Sapporo, capture the exclusive 2026 Hokkaido autumn foliage romance, and treasure unforgettable autumn memories.
